(Minghui.org) The Jiedong District Court in Jieyang City, Guangdong Province, sentenced a local woman to one year in late December 2025, for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Ms. Wu Yanna was arrested at home on April 5, 2025, by officers from the Jiedong District Domestic Security Office, the Yunlu Police Station, and the Quxi Police Station. They targeted her after discovering that she had gone to a local village to talk to people about Falun Gong.
The police raided Ms. Wu’s home and took her to the Jieyang City Detention Center. It is unclear when she was indicted or tried.
This is not the first time that Ms. Wu, a former English teacher at the Meigang Middle School, has been targeted for her faith. She was arrested in late June 2000, while appealing for Falun Gong in Beijing. After ten days of detention in Beijing, she was escorted back to Guangdong and detained for another two weeks. Following another arrest on January 24, 2001, she was held at the Jiedong District Detention Center for over eight months before being transferred to a brainwashing center.
Less than two months after her release, Ms. Wu was put in the same brainwashing center again. She managed to escape, only to be arrested on April 18, 2004, and sentenced to eight years in the Guangdong Province Women’s Prison on December 20 that year.
Ms. Wu was brutally tortured following her 2004 arrest. She was not allowed to use the restroom or sleep for some time. She was also tied up for an extended period of time. Any slight movement would result in beatings, slapping in the face, or having water poured into her nostrils. On some other occasions, she was forced to stand for long hours during the day and had her legs tied up all night. The prison guards also verbally abused her and arranged for inmates to monitor her around the clock, even when she was using the restroom.
