(Minghui.org) A 70-year-old woman in Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, completed a 3.5-year prison sentence in mid-December 2025 for her faith in Falun Gong. She recently recounted her abuse at the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison (located in the capital city of Nanchang).
Ms. Zhou Meili was arrested on June 11, 2022, and sentenced to three and a half years on November 11 that year. On June 4, 2023, she was admitted to the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison, where she served two prior sentences totaling seven and a half years for practicing Falun Gong. In addition to the prison sentences, she also served three forced labor terms totaling five and a half years.
Upon her latest prison admission, Ms. Zhou was ordered to admit her “guilt” in practicing Falun Gong. She refused to comply because no law in China criminalizes Falun Gong. Guard Fu Xuan instructed inmate Luo Huilan to abuse her. Luo forced her to stand from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. every day, during which time she was only allowed to drink water once and use the restroom once. Luo also instigated other cellmates to hurl abusive language at her.
Ms. Zhou’s family went to the prison on June 11, 2023, but guard Luo Rong did not allow them to see her because she had not renounced her faith in Falun Gong. Luo produced a blank piece of paper and ordered the family to write on it, “The prison will be relieved of any responsibility should anything happen to Zhou Meili.” The family refused to comply.
The guards ordered Ms. Zhou to take hypertension medications. She said no, and they instructed three inmates, including Ye Juan, to hold her down on the ground and pry open her mouth to force-feed her the medication. Her gums bled as a result.
Every time higher-ups came to inspect the prison, guard Luo had Ms. Zhou sit down as if she were doing hard labor. As soon as the inspection team left, Luo forced her to resume the standing torture.
For 70 days in the summer of 2023, Ms. Zhou was not allowed to use any water for anything, including brushing her teeth, bathing, or doing laundry.
Ms. Zhou was moved to the Third Division in the prison on July 24, 2024. Because she refused to write thought reports, the guards made her the last one among all 16 people in her cell to use the washroom every night. In September 2024, she refused to fill out a performance evaluation form and was barred from using water again.
Ms. Zhou was not a vegetarian, yet the guards only gave her vegetables to eat when other inmates were given meat.
Ms. Zhou was not the only Falun Gong practitioner tortured at the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison, which was established in 1958, and now boasts around 400 female guards. The guards often used the term reduction as an incentive to motivate inmates to torture Falun Gong practitioners. Minghui.org previously reported on the abuse of other jailed practitioners.
