Ms. Zhang Shuzhi, 65, in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, died on February 7, 2026, due to the persecution of her faith, Falun Gong. Her death came just ten days before the Chinese New Year.
Ms. Zhang struggled with poor health in her final years. She was nearly blind when she completed a three-year prison term in January 2024 for practicing Falun Gong. The abuse in prison also caused tremendous damage to her health. She sought medical treatments after she was released but saw no improvement. She died two years later.
Ms. Zhang began practicing Falun Gong despite the communist regime’s ongoing persecution of the spiritual discipline. She filed a criminal complaint in 2015 against former Chinese dictator Jiang Zemin for launching the persecution of Falun Gong. Officers from the Yingzi Police Station attempted to arrest her at home but she escaped.
The police eventually arrested Ms. Zhang in 2020, after receiving a tip that she went door to door to distribute Falun Gong informational materials. They ordered her to pay 20,000 yuan in exchange for her release. She refused to comply, and they submitted her case to the Songshan District Procuratorate.
Ms. Zhang was likely released on bail at one point but the details were not clear. The Songshan District Court sentenced her to three years at an unknown date. She was admitted to the Inner Mongolia Women’s Prison, where she was tortured and forced to do hard labor. After she was released in January 2024, she never recovered from the damage to health sustained in the prison and she died two years later.
