A woman in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, died on April 22, 2026, after suffering decades of persecution for practicing Falun Gong. She was 60.

Ms. Jiang Lanying

Ms. Jiang Lanying began practicing Falun Gong in 1997. Her poor health soon improved, and she was full of energy. After the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution in 1999, she remained firm in her faith and sought opportunities to raise awareness about the persecution. She traveled to Beijing three times to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong, but was arrested each time. She was given two labor camp terms and three prison terms totaling 15 years and two months.

To protest the persecution, she went on a hunger strike between 2002 and 2005 while in prison. She was force-fed in a hospital during that time. At one point, her weight dropped to 15 kg (33 lbs). The prolonged hunger strike and force-feeding severely damaged her gastrointestinal system. She developed intestinal ulcers and putrefaction.

While serving her final prison sentence, she was tortured, and her left arm was disabled. By the time she was released on January 18, 2022, her hair had turned gray, her vision was blurry, and she was emaciated. Her legs were numb and stiff, and her feet were severely swollen and somewhat uncontrollable.

Ms. Jiang struggled with poor health, and she often vomited. Her condition deteriorated in 2026, and she passed away on April 22, 2026.

Latest Arrest and Prison Sentence

Ms. Jiang was last arrested on July 18, 2019, by over 20 plainclothes officers when she was visiting another practitioner. She was first held at the Nanzhan Police Station. Officer Zhang took her watch and never returned it. She was then taken to the Xihu District Police Department and interrogated until midnight before being transferred to the Nanchang City First Detention Center.

In the detention center, Ms. Jiang had to sleep on the cold, wet concrete floor. When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out months later, the detention center faced severe food shortages and many detainees, including Ms. Jiang, were starved.

The Xihu District Court first scheduled a virtual hearing for June 14, 2020. Ms. Jiang insisted that she didn’t violate any law by practicing Falun Gong and refused to attend the hearing. The judge scheduled another session for July 7 and forced her to stand trial. She refused to accept the court-appointed lawyer—who was instructed to enter a guilty plea for her—and acted as her own lawyer.

The judge adjourned the hearing before Ms. Jiang finished reading her defense statement. He sentenced her to 2.5 years with a 30,000-yuan fine on October 22. She appealed to the Nanchang City Intermediate Court. While her court-appointed lawyer entered a not guilty plea for her in the appeal case, the higher court ruled to uphold her original sentence.

Left Arm Disabled after Torture

Ms. Jiang was taken to the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison on July 8, 2021. As soon as she arrived, guard Zhang Huanhuan ordered several inmates to take her to a small room and attempted to force her to fingerprint a statement to plead guilty.

Between July 17 and 21, guard Liu Jinfeng ordered inmates Fang Lingya, Zeng Chunlan, and Lai Suhua to tie Ms. Jiang in a straitjacket and hang her up in the workshop during the day. In the evening, they pulled her limbs as far apart as possible and tied her in a spread-eagle position in the bed.

After the few days of the tying torture, Ms. Jiang’s arms became severely swollen and lame. It became almost impossible for her to brush her teeth.

The inmates also deprived her of sleep and didn’t allow her to wash. In the heat of the summer, she soon started to smell bad, and her eyes were bloodshot.

The guards later ordered Ms. Jiang to do the forced labor. Whether she was on the way to the workshop or the cafeteria, her feet were still chained. Inmates Yang Xinrong and Yao Lingjing often withheld her food, claiming she hadn’t finished her work quota.

Two months later, Ms. Jiang’s right arm began to recover, but her left arm remained swollen and lame. Her left hand was very weak, and she couldn’t hold anything.

Guard Liu Jinfeng took Ms. Jiang to the prison doctor, surnamed Liu, on October 20, 2021. The doctor examined her left shoulder and arm, which were noticeably lower than the right side. The doctor said there was a big gap between her shoulder and her arm, suggesting that it was dislocated. Not having the proper equipment, the doctor urged the guard to take her to an outside hospital. He also told the guard not to hang Ms. Jiang’s arms over her head or raise them higher than her shoulder, otherwise her arms would be injured even worse.

At the hospital, the doctor asked Ms. Jiang to examine her arm herself. She said she didn’t know how to. Without looking at her arm, the doctor told her to get an X-ray. Looking at the X-ray, the doctor claimed that the condition was caused by a frozen shoulder, not a dislocation. Ms. Jiang tried to explain how she was tortured, but the doctor insisted that it was a frozen shoulder. Guard Xiao broke in and said that Ms. Jiang was a “cult criminal.” The doctor stopped talking to Ms. Jiang and left.

Back in prison, Ms. Jiang was quarantined for 14 days before being allowed to go back to the workshop. Inmates Yang Xinrong and Yao Lingjing told her that guard Luo Rong had made a prison-wide announcement that the prison doctor had misdiagnosed her frozen shoulder as a dislocation.

Ms. Jiang then recalled that, before she was taken to the hospital, guard Liu Jinfeng had threatened her that she wasn’t allowed to talk “nonsense,” or she would face intensified torture.

On December 15, 2021, guard Zhang Huanhuan ordered inmates Yang Xinrong, Li Qiong, and Fang Ping to get Ms. Jiang’s signature on the prepared statement to renounce Falun Gong. When she refused to cooperate, they attempted to hold her hands to sign it. She resisted with all her might. Unable to force her, Yang signed the statement on her behalf.

Because Ms. Jiang tried to clarify the facts about Falun Gong to the guards and inmates, Liu Jinfeng wouldn’t let her wash up and forced her to stand in front of the restroom until 11 p.m. The torture lasted until she was released.

Earlier Persecution

First One-Year Labor Camp Term, Extended to Two Years

Ms. Jiang went to Beijing in November 1999 to appeal and was arrested. While detained at the Nanchang City Third Detention Center, she did the Falun Gong exercises with seven other practitioners. The guards shackled them together, cuffing one of their hands to a shackle. They could not stand up straight and had to bend over at all times. They had to move together; if one person needed to use the restroom, the other seven had to go with her. Meanwhile, the guards continued to beat and verbally abuse them. At night, they could only sit on the ground and lean on each other to rest. The guards didn’t remove the shackles until a month later.

As Ms. Jiang remained firm in her faith, the authorities extended her term by one year. When that one-year term also expired, she was taken directly to a brainwashing center. She went on a hunger strike to protest and was force-fed. They kept the feeding tube in, which caused her tremendous pain and made it difficult for her to breathe.

Despite Ms. Jiang’s serious condition due to the hunger strike, the authorities took her back to the labor camp. The guards incited the inmates to beat her. They kicked her in the head, hit her head against the wall, and stomped on her feet. She was covered with bruises.

During the freezing winter, the guards threatened to pour urine or feces on her. Ms. Jiang was finally released in January 2002 while on the verge of death.

Sentenced to Five Years, and Force Fed for Three Years During Hunger Strike

Ms. Jiang was arrested again around 1 a.m. on July 11, 2002. To prevent her from doing Falun Gong exercises, an officer placed a chair on her legs and then sat on the chair. The chair’s legs pressed on her toes, severely injuring them and causing her toenails to fall off.

After two days of torture and sleep deprivation, Ms. Jiang was transferred to the Shaziling Detention Center. The police attempted to extort money from her mother, saying that she could pay them in exchange for a lighter sentence of Ms. Jiang. The elderly woman refused to comply, and Ms. Jiang was sentenced to five years.

While serving time at the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison, Ms. Jiang held a hunger strike for over three years. The guards said to her, “It’s fine if you die here, but it’s absolutely impossible for us to release you.” They force-fed her during this time. She was issued several critical condition notices, yet she survived. She was released on July 12, 2007.

Another Two-Year Labor Camp Term

While studying Falun Gong’s teaching at another practitioner’s home on April 30, 2009, Ms. Jiang was arrested again. During the interrogation at the police station, the police pepper-sprayed her. They also deprived her of sleep. As soon as she closed her eyes, they pepper-sprayed her. They also shocked her with electric batons.

The police later took Ms. Jiang to the Nanchang City First Detention Center, where she was force-fed a saline solution. After three months of detention, she was transferred to the Jiangxi Province Women’s Forced Labor Camp to serve a two-year term.

The labor camp guards arranged for inmates to monitor Ms. Jiang and didn’t allow her to talk to other detained Falun Gong practitioners. They beat her at will and often forced her to work for long hours without pay. She was released on May 3, 2011.

Sentenced to 3.5 Years and Beaten in Prison

Ms. Jiang was arrested another time on February 24, 2015, after being reported for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. She was held at the Yichun City Detention Center and secretly sentenced to 3.5 years by the Zhangzhu City Court on September 10, 2015. She appealed, but lost the case. She was admitted to the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison on December 30, 2015.

The prison guards forced Ms. Jiang to stand for hours on end, often from 6: 30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., every day for nine months. She was not allowed to lean against the wall or have any support. She developed severe swelling and varicose veins in both of her legs. Meanwhile, the guards also deprived her of sleep, beat her, and starved her.

The guards once hung her up by the wrists, with her feet barely touching the ground. She was left like that for 24 hours. To prevent her from falling asleep, they put medicated oil in her eyes and stuffed her mouth with dirty socks.

Ms. Jiang’s lower back and legs were severely injured as a result of the torture. She had trouble standing up from a seated position or walking down stairs.
