(Minghui.org) A 71-year-old woman in Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, was admitted to the Shanxi Province Women’s Prison on June 6, 2026, to serve a three-year term she was sentenced to in 2020 for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999.
Ms. Gao Jiping was originally arrested on September 7, 2019, but released on bail ten days later due to poor health. The court sentenced her to three years on September 23, 2020. Due to her high blood pressure, severe anemia, and uremia, however, she was denied admission to the Taiyuan City Fourth Detention Center five times. Using their connections, the police succeeded on their sixth attempt on March 4, 2026. Ms. Gao was transferred to the Shanxi Province Women’s Prison on June 6. She is being held in the “strict management” team and denied family visits or phone calls.
In late April 2021, the Wanbailin District Court ordered Ms. Gao to be examined at several hospitals, all of which attested that she had severe health issues and was unfit for detention.
Heping South Road Police Station officers took Ms. Gao for a physical exam in July 2021. She was again deemed unfit for detention and sent home.
Four officers harassed Ms. Gao at home on February 7, 2023, but did not arrest her.
Three different officers took Ms. Gao for a physical exam on February 24, 2023. They submitted her exam results to the Taiyuan City Intermediate Court. Since she did not meet the detention requirements, she was allowed to remain on bail.
Around 5 p.m. on September 2, 2025, Ms. Gao was walking near Taiyuan University of Technology when officers from the Heping South Road Police Station picked her up and took her to the Taiyuan City Fourth People’s Hospital for a physical exam. The next day, they took her to the Shanxi Province Cardiovascular Hospital for another exam. They held her in the Changfeng Street Police Station that night. On September 4, they took her to the Shanxi Province Chinese Medicine University Affiliated Hospital for a third exam.
Although the results of all three exams indicated that Ms. Gao was unfit for detention, the police still took her to the Taiyuan City Fourth Detention Center on September 4, 2025. The detention center refused to admit her, so the police took her back to the police station around 11 p.m. When they notified her husband to pick her up, they did not tell him that his wife had had three physical exams.
Due to the mental distress, Ms. Gao’s health continued to decline. She became mute and slow to react. Despite her condition, officers from the Wanbailin District Police Department arrested her on March 4, 2026, and took her to the Taiyuan City Fourth Detention Center. She was transferred to the Shanxi Province Women’s Prison on June 6 and is currently going through two months of “strict management.”
