Arrested in a Police Sweep, 62-Year-Old Heilongjiang Woman Gets 7 Years for Practicing Falun Gong

July 10, 2026 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Heilongjiang Province, China

(Minghui.org) A 62-year-old woman in Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province, was admitted to the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison on June 18, 2026, to serve a seven-year term for her faith in Falun Gong, Minghui.org learned recently.

Ms. Liu Fujin, born in August 1963, was arrested at home on August 21, 2025, by officers from the Wujia Town Police Station. They confiscated 16,000 yuan of banknotes with Falun Gong messages printed on them and 200 self-adhesive stickers bearing messages about Falun Gong.

Over 20 other local Falun Gong practitioners were also arrested on the same day. The police sweep was ordered by the Harbin City Political and Legal Affairs Committee, an extra-judicial agency given the power to oversee the persecution of Falun Gong.

Ms. Liu appeared in the Daoli District Court on March 30, 2026. Details of her trial are unclear. She was initially sentenced to three years, but the court increased her term to seven years. She filed an appeal but lost. She was transferred to the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison on June 18, 2026.

Besides Ms. Liu, at least two other practitioners arrested in the same police sweep were also confirmed to have been sentenced for their faith, including Ms. Zhou Chuanying (7.5 years) and Ms. Zhao Xihua (three years and two months).

Past Persecution

Ms. Liu used to suffer from various ailments, including superficial gastritis, atrophic gastritis, cholecystitis, liver disease, nephritis, and gynecological disorders. Her husband struggled to care for her, their child, and his elderly mother, on top of managing his fresh tofu shop. The couple felt tremendous pressure with their tight finances.

Ms. Liu took up Falun Gong in April 1997 and recovered from all her symptoms in less than one month. She was able to help her husband make tofu and improve their financial situation.

After the communist regime launched a nationwide campaign against Falun Gong in July 1999, Ms. Liu went to Beijing in July 2000 to appeal for her right to freedom of belief. She was arrested on Tiananmen Square and taken to a detention facility in Changping District, Beijing.

The police shocked her with electric batons and promised to release her as soon as she revealed her home address. She believed them and gave them the address. Six days later staffers from the Shuangcheng District Liaison in Beijing picked her up and held her in the liaison office for four days. After that, they took her back to Harbin and put her in the Xinmin Street Brainwashing Center. She was detained for over ten days and forced to pay 200 yuan of food expenses and a 1,000-yuan fine.

Ms. Liu was home on February 4, 2002, when the local community secretary led four people to knock on the door. They claimed that some higher-up officials requested to talk to her. She went with them, only to be taken straight to a brainwashing center.

There were over 20 practitioners in total (both males and females), and they had to share one chamber pot and were denied use of the regular restroom. The metal gate of the brainwashing center was always locked to prevent them from escaping.

Ms. Liu was fined 500 yuan and released after 23 days. The local police and community workers harassed her at home on a regular basis. She felt tremendous pressure.
