Torture Methods and Persecution in Jilin Province Women’s Prison

Aug. 10, 2026 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Jilin Province, China

(Minghui.org) The Eighth Division of Jilin Province Women’s Prison is used to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. Newly arrived practitioners are incarcerated there and subjected to mental and physical abuse and to high-intensity labor, with the goal of forcing them to renounce their faith.

Below are some torture methods used in the prison.

Mental and Physical Abuse

After practitioners are admitted to the prison, they are ordered to sign five guarantee statements renouncing their faith. Because the prison requires practitioners to be fully “transformed,” guards incite inmates to torture practitioners into submission.

Two inmates are usually assigned to monitor one practitioner throughout the day, including during meal times, restroom use, washing up, and family meetings. The inmates not only monitor the practitioners but also beat, humiliate, and torture them.

Most Common Torture Method: Sitting on a Small Stool

The stool is only a few centimeters (inches) high and has an uneven surface. One can only sit if the legs are curled up and the buttocks barely touch the seat. One has to sit on the stool from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m., while being restricted from drinking water and using the restroom. When one’s buttocks eventually fester, the inmates pour salt onto the stool to increase their pain. For even slight slouching, the practitioner is slapped, kicked, or choked.

Individual Cases

Ms. Liu Guijie Forced to Sit on Small Stool for 50 Days, Developed High Blood Pressure

Ms. Liu Guijie of Gongzhuling City was arrested on February 6, 2023, and sentenced to three years on August 25, 2023. She was sent to Jilin Province Women’s Prison in November of that year and held in Cell 102 of the Eighth Division.

Zhang Qidi, an inmate in charge of monitoring Ms. Liu, refused to let her drink water or use the restroom. Zhang gave Ms. Liu only a little water when she had to take medicine. Zhang was known to drag a person out of the restroom when the person was only halfway through using it.

Ms. Liu was forced to sit on a small stool from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m., with her legs curled up, her hands on her knees, her body straight, and not moving. She was not allowed to drink water or use the restroom. While sitting on the stool, she was forced to watch videos slandering Falun Gong and to memorize the prison rules. If she couldn’t recite the rules, she was not allowed to wash up, was verbally abused, and was forced to write words that slander Falun Gong.

By the third day, Ms. Liu’s buttocks were bleeding. Her pants were repeatedly soaked with blood, dried, soaked again, and became very hard. Despite her systolic blood pressure being as high as 220 mm Hg (normal is 120 mm Hg), she was forced to sit on the stool every day for 50 days.

After reluctantly renouncing her faith, she was transferred to Cell 10 and required to attend brainwashing class every day from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. She was not allowed to close her eyes while watching the 7 p.m. news broadcast. Every week, she had to write a thought report defaming Falun Gong.

Her buttocks didn’t fully heal until two years later, with two black marks and minimal flesh remaining.

In April 2025, Ms. Liu couldn’t withstand the mental abuse and requested to perform labor despite knowing that her body couldn’t handle the demanding tasks.

She worked from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and could use the restroom only four times a day. The number of restroom breaks was reduced to three whenever she had to rush to meet production deadlines. Lunchtime was only a few minutes and many people weren’t given enough to eat. Anyone who didn’t finish the food provided was not allowed to order premium products from the prison supermarket.

The prison food was extremely bad. The meat and noodles tasted rancid. Everyone was given old grain. Whenever the prison was inspected, the prison authorities would delay lunch to avoid exposing the poor quality of the food.

The food ordered was nearing expiration. Those who couldn’t finish it would have their food confiscated and points deducted. Points were crucial for sentence reduction, and a reduction in points meant no chance of sentence reduction for six months.

Everyone who works in the workshop is over 60, with the youngest being 62.

Other Persecution Cases

Ms. Zhao Shuyu had severe high blood pressure. As a garment handler in the workshop, she had to walk around and often fainted.

Ms. Li Hong, 45, refused to transform for three months and was forced to sit on a small stool until her buttocks festered. The inmates poured salt onto the stool to intensify her pain. They also gave her more food but refused to let her use the restroom, causing her to wet her bed.

Another practitioner, surnamed Liu, refused to sign statements renouncing Falun Gong. As a result she was forced to squat for prolonged periods leading to her suffering a rectal prolapse. The inmates pepper-sprayed her and dragged her around. Eventually, she had to be taken to the hospital.

Ms. Liu Minjie, who was held in the Tenth Division, was forced to renounce sign statements renouncing her faith but even after she gave in, the inmates continued to torture and humiliate her. The inmates pulled her pubic hair, pinched her breasts, pulled her hair, twisted her ears, kicked the stool she was sitting on, poured cold water on her clothes, hit her nose with cardboard, tried to freeze her during the winter, and refused to let her use the blankets at night.

Cell 007: Most Brutal Transformation Dark Room

Practitioners who refused to renounce their faith were eventually sent to Cell 007. The cell leader, Dai Yu, stuffed a photo of Falun Gong’s founder into practitioners’ pants and humiliated them, causing some practitioners to suffer a mental breakdown. Ultimately, most practitioners sent to Cell 007 were coerced into signing statements renouncing their faith.
