(Minghui.org) Two women in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, were sentenced on July 17, 2026, for raising awareness of the Chinese Communist Party’s ongoing persecution of their faith, Falun Gong.
Ms. Xu Julian, 69, was given one year and 11 months with two years probation and a 2,500-yuan fine. Ms. Qiu Deying, 66, was handed a sentence of one year and eight months with two years probation and a 2,300-yuan fine. Both women were forced to pay the fines even before their verdicts were issued.
The wrongful conviction of Ms. Xu and Ms. Qiu stemmed from their arrests on October 9, 2024, for using a device to send text messages about Falun Gong. They were held in a brainwashing center for nine days and released on October 18.
On June 4, 2026, the women were notified by the Xihu District Procuratorate that they were indicted for “violating Article 300 of the Criminal Law which stipulates that those using a cult organization to undermine law enforcement must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
The indictments also stated the recommended sentences: 20 months for Ms. Qiu, 23 months for Ms. Xu, and fines for both.
Ms. Qiu was summoned to the Xihu District Court on June 12. Her daughter went with her.
When the judge asked Ms. Qiu why she had to practice Falun Gong, she said she was bedridden for three years due to a severe illness. Although she’d tried many medical treatments, nothing helped, but she was fine after she started practicing Falun Gong. Now in her 60s, she is full of energy and looks young.
Ms. Qiu’s daughter added that her mother, who had never attended school and was illiterate, was able to read Falun Gong books after taking up the practice.
Ms. Qiu and Ms. Xu were tried in the Xihu District Court on July 14, 2026. The court-appointed lawyers were instructed to enter guilty pleas for them.
The women were convicted three days after the hearing. They noted that the judges gave them the exact sentences the procuratorate had recommended.
Presiding judge Liu Yufang (+86-18170028008, +86-18070080229, +86-791-86783167), judges Deng Wenhui (+86-13807098398) and Zhang Yujuan (+86-18070080321), clerk Xiao Yuhao, and prosecutor Zou Changfei signed the verdicts.
