(Minghui.org) A 66-year-old woman in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, was recently sentenced to 18 months because she practices Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Niu Guifang’s husband suffered a stroke a year ago and he relied on her for care. Her arrest and prison sentence left him in a dire situation.
Ms. Niu was arrested around 6 a.m. on August 27, 2025. Several officers from the Hushitai Police Station waited outside her home and snatched the key from a family member when he went out.
The police raided Ms. Niu’s home and confiscated her Falun Gong books and informational materials. A neighbor saw her nose and mouth were bleeding after she was beaten by the police. She was beaten again while she was interrogated at the police station.
The police detained Ms. Niu at the Shenyang City First Detention Center and later submitted her case to the Dadong District Procuratorate. An officer from the Shenbei New District Police Department called her family on September 30, 2025, saying that she would likely be sentenced to prison.
Ms. Niu was tried by the Dadong District Court on March 11, 2026. Her family called the police two months later to inquire about her case. The police claimed that another hearing would be held soon. The family didn’t receive any follow-up information about the hearing, but were able to confirm in early August that she had been sentenced to 18 months in prison. No other details of her prosecution are available.
This is the second time that Ms. Niu has been sentenced to prison for her faith. She was previously arrested on July 19, 2012, and sentenced to three years by the Shenbei New District Court on February 27, 2013. She was admitted to the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison on November 19, 2013.
The prison guards subjected Ms. Niu to constant torture and forced her to work without pay. By the time she was released on July 19, 2015, she was extremely weak and her vision was blurry.
