(Minghui.org) A 71-year-old woman in Yingkou City, Liaoning Province, became wheelchair-bound while she detained for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999.
Ms. Mou Yanping was arrested on March 7, 2026 and her home was ransacked. When her family went to the Bayuquan District Police Department in late March to inquire about her case, an officer revealed that her case had been submitted to the local procuratorate.
Ms. Mou is currently held at the Yingkou City Detention Center, and denied visits with her family. According to her lawyer who recently visited her, she has lost the ability to walk and relied on a wheelchair to get around.
Ms. Mou was previously arrested at home on August 23, 2018. While held at the Yingkou City Detention Center, she developed severe medical conditions due to the abuse and required emergency treatment several times. She was released on bail on September 26, 2018, when she was on the verge of death.
The police continued to harass Ms. Mou at home and submitted her case to the Bayuquan District Procuratorate. She was notified by the Zhanqian District Court on September 10, 2019, that she was scheduled to face trial weeks later on September 23.
Ms. Mou was deceived into reporting to the local police station to answer some questions on December 11, 2019. She went, only to be arrested and admitted to the Yingkou City Detention Center. She received the verdict the next day that she had been sentenced to one year in prison.
The persecution took a toll on Ms. Mou’s health. When she was released on November 4, 2020, her eyes were dull and she had mobility issues on one side of her body. She walked with a limp and struggled to live on her own.
