A woman in Zunyi City, Guizhou Province, passed away 27 days after she was released from serving a five-year prison term for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999. She was around 78.
Ms. Liu Shuling was arrested on May 25, 2021, by officers of the local Domestic Security Office and Changzheng Police Station. She was held at the Zunyi City Second Detention Center and later sentenced to five years.
Because Ms. Liu refused to renounce Falun Gong, she was tortured and soon became incapacitated. Yet the prison refused to provide any explanation regarding what happened.
When Ms. Liu’s family first visited her, she could still talk. During their second visit, however, she had lost the ability to speak and could only communicate by shaking her head. Her family worried that she had been injected with a toxic drug while in custody that caused her to become mute. She was also extremely weak and emaciated.
When Ms. Liu’s term expired on May 26, 2026, the local police took her to a nursing home. They assigned specific personnel to watch her and also set up a surveillance camera in her room. Only her family was allowed to visit her.
Ms. Liu had blood in her stool, and she could only consume small amounts of liquid food. When the nursing home sent her to the hospital, doctors found that several of her ribs and a thigh bone were broken. These fractures were determined to be the reason for her incapacitation.
After ten days of inpatient care, the hospital forcibly discharged Ms. Liu, claiming that the bleeding had stopped. However, only a few days later, she fell into critical condition again and was taken back to the hospital. Suspecting that she didn’t have much time left, her family took her home two days later, around 3 p.m. on June 23. She died at 9 p.m. that day, 27 days after being released from the prison.
In addition to her latest prison sentence, Ms. Liu had previously served a five-year labor camp term in the early years of the persecution after being arrested for going to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong.
Ms. Liu was arrested again on October 30, 2019. Her home was ransacked, and the printer, computer, and other office supplies that she had used to print Falun Gong informational materials were confiscated. To avoid further persecution, she was forced to live away from home for an unknown period of time.
