Ms. Cui Qunying

A 63-year-old woman in Yanji City, Jilin Province, died on June 24, 2026, after enduring years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.

Ms. Cui Qunying, born in October 1962, was sickly since childhood. Her stomach ailments often caused intense pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. She also suffered from hyperthyroidism, lung disease, and other conditions. All her symptoms disappeared after she started to practice Falun Gong in 1997. She also became a much better person. She cared for her bedridden mother for over ten years and her parents-in-law before their passing. She offered to babysit her youngest sister’s child in her own home. When no one had time to visit her middle sister’s ill father-in-law in the hospital, she went without hesitation. Her extended family and neighbors often said she was “the best of the best among good people.”

After the Chinese Communist Party launched a nationwide campaign to wipe out Falun Gong in July 1999, Ms. Cui held firm to her faith and was repeatedly targeted.

The Longjin City Police Department arrested Ms. Cui in late 1999 when she was en-route to Changchun (the capital of Jilin Province) to appeal for Falun Gong. She was detained for 15 days.

Ms. Cui went to Beijing in December 2000 to appeal for Falun Gong and was arrested on Tiananmen Square. She refused to reveal her identity and was shocked with electric batons, slapped in the face, and stripped naked to stand for long hours. The police didn’t give her any toilet paper or sanitary pads when she had her period.

Ms. Cui was later given one and a half years of forced labor. The guards in the Daxing District Women’s Labor Camp in Beijing drew a large amount of blood from her. They also forced her to watch videos slandering Falun Gong. Her health kept declining after she was released. She developed diabetes and a heart condition and had her gallbladder removed.

Ms. Cui regained her health after she resumed practicing Falun Gong in 2007.

About eight officers from the Yanji City Domestic Security Office and the Chaoyangchuan Police Station broke into Ms. Cui’s home through her windows in 2014. Her husband returned home to see a big mess. He condemned them for their illegal action, and a police supervisor apologized to him.

Ms. Cui was visiting her sister on April 12, 2017, when agents from the Yilan Police Station broke in and arrested them. The police targeted the sisters because they both filed criminal complaints against former Chinese dictator Jiang Zemin for launching the persecution of Falun Gong.

The police raided Ms. Cui’s home without showing a search warrant. Her Falun Gong books, computer, laptop, and other valuables were confiscated. She was detained for 15 days.

Ms. Cui was arrested again on April 3, 2021, and put under criminal detention the next day even though a required physical exam indicated she had tuberculosis. She was sentenced to one and a half years with a 2,000-yuan fine on August 10 and admitted to the Jilin Province Women’s Prison on September 17, 2021. Because she refused to write statements to renounce Falun Gong, Ms. Cui was denied family visits.

In February 2022, a prison guard called her family and told them to make a 2,000-yuan deposit for her but did not say why. When the guard called them again on May 24, he said that Ms. Cui had had a stroke and also suffered from tuberculosis. He claimed that she’d had the stroke before being admitted to the prison, but her condition had now gotten worse.

Ms. Cui’s family asked why the prison would admit her if she’d had a stroke before as alleged. If she developed the condition after she was incarcerated, then what could have caused it? The guard refused to provide any further information.

Ms. Cui’s term ended on October 3, 2022. Instead of having her family pick her up from the prison, the guards had them wait at a highway exit. They drove her there and told her loved ones that she was still suffering from stroke symptoms, diabetes, severe anemia, and bone marrow cancer.

Ms. Cui’s family noted that she had lost the ability to walk and suffered from edema and memory decline. She was often confused and cried a lot. When she was lucid, she told her family that the guards often held her down to give her injections and blood transfusions or force her to take pills.

Ms. Cui couldn’t lift her right arm or even hold a rice bowl. Her family later noticed that black, needle-point-sized, thorn-like growths emerged from the skin on her hands, feet, and abdomen, and even from the corners of her eyes. They suspect those were the places where the guards had injected her with unknown drugs.

Ms. Cui eventually became completely incapacitated. Her youngest sister offered to care for her since her husband and son were so traumatized by her persecution that they had both developed stroke symptoms, diabetes, and heart disease over the years. Ms. Cui’s son in particular was often hospitalized.

Ms. Cui died on June 24, 2026, less than four years after her prison release.
