(Minghui.org) Mr. Liu Kaifang, 54, in Chongqing has been detained for over five months because he practices Falun Gong.
Mr. Liu was arrested at his rental apartment on March 3, 2026. The police beat him hard and confiscated over 100 pieces of paper currency with Falun Gong information printed on them. He was admitted to the Yubei District Detention Center the next day. His arrest was approved on March 17.
Mr. Liu, a former employee of the Beibei District Pharmaceutical Company, began practicing Falun Gong in 1997. For upholding his faith, he has been repeatedly targeted after the Chinese Communist Party ordered a nationwide persecution of the spiritual discipline in July 1999.
Mr. Liu was previously arrested on November 25, 2001, and held at the Beibei District Detention Center for over four months. He was forced to make paper bags.
He was arrested again at work on September 26, 2002, and taken to a brainwashing center. He was forced to watch propaganda materials that smeared Falun Gong, stand for hours, and deprived of sleep. Because he refused to renounce Falun Gong, he was given a two-year labor camp term on November 28, 2002, and admitted to the Xishanping Forced Labor Camp on the same day. His employer terminated him weeks later.
While at the labor camp, Mr. Liu was tortured, starved, and his legs were split (a form of torture). He was also forced to work without pay, primarily making electronic coils.
Mr. Liu’s next arrest was on September 28, 2007, while on his way to work at a factory. He was sentenced to five years by the Yubei District Court on June 3, 2008. His appeal was denied by the Chongqing City First Intermediate Court on July 8. He was admitted to the Yongchuan Prison on September 17, 2008.
The torture methods he was subjected to in the prison included sitting motionless on a bench for long hours, brainwashing, isolation, sleep deprivation, denied restroom use, standing for hours, verbal abuse, and beatings. Once, the inmates beat his thighs so badly that he had trouble walking or using the restroom.
To avoid further persecution after he was released from prison, he was forced to live away from home for years.
