(Minghui.org) A 72-year-old woman in Urumqi City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, has been secretly sentenced to three years in prison because she practices Falun Gong, Minghui.org recently learned.
Ms. Pan Xiuhua, 71, was arrested in March 2025, with another practitioner, Ms. Luo Chuanmei, after they were reported for talking to people about Falun Gong months earlier.
Due to the abuse at the Urumqi Fourth Detention Center, both women were unable to walk or stand. Ms. Pan was given a wheelchair to get around. It is unclear whether Ms. Luo was offered any assistance.
Ms. Pan was later sentenced to three years. She is now serving time at the Xinjiang Second Prison.
Ms. Luo was given a prison term of three years and eight months. She died on October 3, 2025, while serving time at the Xinjiang Second Prison. Her family wasn’t notified of her passing until after the prison authorities had her secretly cremated.
This is not the first time that Ms. Pan has been targeted for their faith. Her husband was forced to divorce her after the persecution of Falun Gong began in July 1999.
She was arrested on February 3, 2007, and sentenced to three years on June 18, 2007. She was admitted to the Xinjiang Women’s Prison around October 2007. She was punched and kicked numerous times for refusing to answer the roll call. She went on a hunger strike in protest and was brutally force-fed. After another arrest in 2011, she was given one and a half years of forced labor on November 1 that year.
Ms. Pan was arrested again on June 28, 2014, and stood trial on April 10, 2015. She was later sentenced to two years in prison.
Ms. Pan’s next arrest was on May 26, 2017, with her sentenced to three and a half years in December that year by the Midong District Court.
