Adley is a young man we met on the road. He has curly, blonde hair and a pair of eyes beaming with wisdom. He loves music, and he is innocent and kind. He walked with us in the mountains for a week during which his sincerity and compassion touched us all the way. Adley was also moved and changed by the selflessness, compassion and extraordinary willpower exhibited by Dafa practitioners.
This is how we met Adley. During the first week of our walk, one day, we stopped at a shop to buy some water. I handed our SOS Urgent Rescue flyer to a young man there. He opened his hands and said, "Sorry, my hands are dirty. I'll come back after I wash them." I thought he used that as an excuse not to accept our flyer. To our surprise, a few minutes later, he came back with his hands clean and asked for a copy. He read the flyer briefly while standing completely still. He introduced himself to us and expressed his admiration and surprise at our walk. But he couldn't understand why the Chinese Government would want to persecute Falun Gong. We briefly explained it to him, and gave him a complete set of Dafa materials. Adley was very happy. He is a member of OXFAM (an organization that helps women and children who are being used as cheap labor). He suggested that we get in touch with this organization so more people would know about this brutal torture. The compassionate Adley said that he and his girlfriend would write to the Prime Minister urging him to write to the Chinese Ambassador to call for an end to the persecution.
Adley enjoys outdoor activities. He wanted to walk with us for a week. We were very touched by his support for justice. Adley said he needed a little time to prepare and that he would catch up with us later.
A few days later, Adley took a bus and caught up with us. We happened to have an exercise demo to do at a high school on the following day. Adley naturally became our presenter. He carefully read the exercise section in the book, "Falun Gong." When we meditated that night, Adley strongly sensed a kind of peaceful and serene energy. He was surprised. From his expression, we could tell he was deeply shaken. He began to treat this special walk seriously.
The exercise demo at the high school was a success. Practitioners' slow and graceful movements, accompanied by Adley's smooth and light explanation, deeply attracted our audience, which consisted of students and faculty members.
On the road, we showed little interest for the beautiful scenery. With righteous thoughts on our minds, we walked pretty fast. Adley was barely keeping up. A practitioner explained to him the reason we wanted to do this walk: it is not for ourselves, but a way to tell the world's people the greatness of Falun Dafa and the great compassion and kindness of our fellow practitioners in China through the mighty willpower and compassionate heart they have cultivated from Falun Dafa. Adley listened quietly. He was thinking, and also changing. We felt he already treated this walk very seriously and sincerely from the bottom of his heart. He walked faster and faster. His understanding of Dafa was no longer limited to the superficial sympathy or help, he genuinely experienced the truthful, compassionate and selfless spirit of Dafa practitioners. On average, we walked forty kilometers (approx. 24 miles) a day. This was a test for Adley. His feet swelled up, and he walked with a limp. But he endured it. He said what he endured was nothing compared to what Chinese Falun Gong practitioners went through. Every time when we reached our destination, he took the initiative to distribute flyers to every person he ran into. He polished the speeches we prepared for a press conference. He also patiently corrected our pronunciation and tone. When reporters were present, he went to them on his own and introduced Falun Gong to them. He would also explain to them why he supported it. He did everything from his heart. Seeing him becoming so involved, we were deeply touched by the kindness that came from the bottom of his heart. Adley was quite good at enduring hardships. He never complained once for having instant noodles everyday, or sleeping in the open by a peak with a cold wind blowing hard, or slept on a cement floor in a Laundromat. He still laughed and enjoyed himself. Music-loving Adley also composed a song for this special walk.
A week flew by. We were sorry to leave each other. Adley had tears in his eyes. He said he wanted to give each one of us a hug but he would respect the Chinese culture, so instead, he shook hands with every one of us, and said good-bye. I know for sure this week will remain in his memory forever.
Before he left, he wrote a touching letter to all of us.
"My dear amazing friends,
Good job on being such kind hearted courageous people. Your lives, I'm sure, will touch the hearts of many people in Canada and across the world. I know this because it happened to me.
As I write this I'm feeling sad but happy at the same time. I'm sad because I won't be hanging out with the nicest people in the world but I'm happy because I know that you'll inspire many more people just like you did with me.
I always felt confident about being with you because you always spoke of truth and genuine compassion. The way you'd express yourself so passionately while speaking with others really inspired me and made me realize how much the power of one mouth and mind really do have.
Take care, peace be with you as well as truth, compassion, tolerance."
The compassionate Adley, may truthfulness, compassion and forbearance be with you.
