Web site and modern press center, solicited interview requests, even welcomed journalists with a
lavish cocktail party. At first blush, it looked like a political media event anywhere else in the
world.
But the surface openness at China's Communist Party congress this week in Beijing has, in many ways,
proved to be an illusion.

Although many guards were present in Tiananmen Square during the Sixteenth Party's Congress, on the opening day of the meeting, many protests still took place in front of the People's Great Hall. Falun Gong practitioners distributed flyers to protest Jiang's illegal persecution. According to an Apple Daily November 9th report, at least seven protesters were taken away from Tiananmen Square.
