On March 29, 2002 Radio Free Asia reported that the police in Beijing's Haidian District Public Security Bureau have confirmed that American Jason Pomerleau and his girlfriend, Canadian student Christine Loftus were detained on March 28th in Zhongguancun, Haidian District, Beijing. Jason's mother, Mrs. Pomerleau said that most of her family members practice Falun Gong and because of their practice they have healthier bodies and minds.
On that same day Radio Free Asia also reported that Jilin Province in China is suffering the worst spring drought in two decades. More than 2 million hectares [a metric unit of area equal 10,000 sq m or 2.471 acres] of farmland are affected; the cornfields are dry and the ground is cracked down to about one to two meters deep. The spring drought in Shandong Province is also very serious this year -- more than 2 million people cannot get enough drinking water, 1.8 million hectares of farmland are affected and 500,000 livestock do not have water to drink. A hostess in a hotel in Jinan City said that Baotu Spring, "The First Spring Under Heaven" in Jinan City, has dried up.
Central News Agency March 28th special dispatch from Ottawa: On March 27 and 28, practitioners held a hunger strike appeal in front of Canada's Foreign Affairs Ministry building to call for urgent action from the Canadian government to condemn and stop the Chinese government's abuse and murder of Falun Gong practitioners in Changchun City.
