According to a report by the South China Net on June 21st, some areas in China have incurred severe flooding since early June, causing heavy losses both in human lives and in the economy. Lately, certain districts in Southwestern, Northwestern and Southern China sustained heavy rainfall. The heavy downpour caused significant damage and loss to Chongqing City, as well as Shaanxi, Sichuan, Fujian, Jiangxi and Guizhou provinces. According to a yet-to-be-completed survey, nearly one hundred million people were directly affected by the deluge, with economic losses reaching 10 Billion Yuan.
Fujian Province was among the most severely impacted areas along the Southeastern coastline. Since the beginning of June, heavy rainfall was recorded in the upper reaches of the main river in this province, the Min River. More than ten people were killed or injured. In the city of Chongqing, heavy rainfall flooded two coalmines--973 mineworkers were trapped inside the mineshaft. Fortunately all but three were saved after an intense emergency rescue effort.
According to the China Meteorological Bureau forecast, there will be more rainfall in the southern part of China, as well as northern part of China over the next few days. Flood prevention and the control effort will face its most critical challenge yet.
