I gained a much deeper understanding after exchanging ideas with a Dafa disciple who is a vocalist. She suggested that Dafa disciples sing Dafa songs on stage instead of popular or famous everyday people's songs. For Dafa disciples majoring in vocalism, a solid basis of understanding in the Fa is required as well as the ability to let go of fame and self-interest. Otherwise, it would be impossible.
If a Dafa disciple majoring in vocalism decides to sing an everyday person's song during a Dafa concert, it may mean that she has practiced it for a very long time, maybe even her whole lifetime. She must be very good at it, and she may have received awards for it. An attachment to fame may be present based on the reception of audiences in the past.
In contrast, to sing a Dafa song does not involve fame. Considering herself as a practitioner, the first thing is to decide whether to sing or not. The most difficult thing is "fame." It is very common that vocalists pay more attention to fame than money. However, when singing Dafa songs, neither the singer nor the audience is familiar with it. Plus, there are no everyday people "experts" in the audience to judge you. When you first sing a Dafa song, the audience's response may not be as dramatic as when singing a pop song. The more unknown a song is, the more difficult it is to sing. In vocalism there is the issue of truthfulness, and there is no way to "fake" it. One has to sing with one's whole mind and body. Only by being totally focused will one perform well.
This means that a Dafa disciple who has been a vocalist throughout her whole life must forsake fame and self-interest. If one chooses to sing Dafa songs throughout the concert, this equates to abandoning the goal that one has pursued and worked for one's whole life. If she dares to do this, isn't it the same as letting go of life and death?
Another Dafa disciple who has recently graduated from voice school has to study the Fa for quite a long time each time before singing Dafa songs. Otherwise, she will not do well.
