On April 5th and 6th, 2003, the International Human Rights Association held its 31st annual meeting in Frankfurt, Germany. The topic of this annual meeting was "Eliminating Cruel Punishment." China became the focal point during this meeting, and the persecution of Falun Gong was a major topic of the human rights abuse discussion.
The International Human Rights Association was established in 1972, and its headquarters is located in Frankfurt. There are 25 branches established worldwide. This association devotes itself to improving the human rights situation of every country. The association also holds an observer seat in the European Parliament.
At the press conference held during the annual meeting, a German Falun Gong practitioner talked about the severe persecution of Falun Gong occurring in China today, and announced that Falun Gong practitioners have filed a lawsuit against the actions of the German Police during Jiang's visit to Germany last year.
During a discussion about China, the attendees talked about the Article 23 legislation in Hong Kong and how it has caused negative affects on Hong Kong's democracy and freedom. Yuzhi Wang, a practitioner from Canada, talked about her own plight of being persecuted for practicing Falun Gong in China. She was sent to a labor camp three times, and was even beaten and tortured in the Wanjia Labor Camp during her 100-day detention there.
On the morning of April 6th, the resolution condemning the general human rights abuses and persecution of Falun Gong in China was adopted by a unanimous vote. The resolution asked the German government to raise a motion condemning the human rights situation in China to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. This resolution will be formally handed over by the German government to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.
