After the persecution of Falun Gong started on July 20, 1999, when practitioners were rounded up, their homes ransacked and their phone lines tapped, Zhan Wei decided to appeal to his local government for Falun Gong. As a result, he was detained for several days. He prepared his own truth-clarifying materials and posted them himself. He was very determined in his desire to validate the Fa. However, some locals reported him, and since then, police cars were seen around his home every day. Staff from the Politics and Security Department of the local public security bureau came to his home to harass him regularly, and his phone was also tapped. His whole family lived in fear. Fearing for the safety of his wife and son, Zhan Wei's father could not even relax in his own home. The neighborhood committee also harassed them constantly. Zhan's mother's identification card was taken away. His father was not a practitioner, and he was so terrified that he would not even answer the phone.
The police harassed Zhan Wei at work as well. On various occasions the staff from the Politics and Security Department would come looking for him at work and make his boss take them out for dinner. Zhan's boss said that within half a year, the company had spent 10,000 Yuan* on entertaining the police. They demanded that Zhan Wei write some documents called "Reflections", and "The Three Letters"í repentance letter, guarantee letter not to practice and appeal, and separation letter to renounce Falun Gong. They demanded that he choose between being a Falun Gong practitioner or a Party member. In response, he said that if he could only choose one, he would choose Falun Gong. What he said caused him even more trouble. Once, Zhan brought his fianc e to accompany him to his workplace while he worked overtime. When Zhan was working, with his fianc e reading by his side, the police from Chengguan Police Station took him into custody, and demanded that he write things defaming Falun Gong. When he refused, they detained him for 15 days, and released him only after his family paid the bail in addition to a fine of 300 Yuan without getting a receipt. Not long after, he was again taken into police custody when he was at work, and he was held at the Second Detention Center, where he went on a hunger strike in protest. They then transferred him to the First Detention Center and sentenced him to one year of forced labor. Zhan Wei's parents had been planning his wedding, and because of his sentence, the wedding fell through.
While he was at the detention center, he continued to practice the exercises. He was forced by the guards to sleep on the concrete floor instead of the bed. It was winter, and his fingers were suffering from frostbite, but the guardsthe gu gua stabbed his fingers with a sharp piece of steel wire and starved him at the same time. Whenever his family visited him, they were stopped and searched for food, which was then confiscated. His fianc e, upset by the fact that Zhan Wei was jailed simply for being a good person, went to Beijing to appeal and was also jailed. His father wrote, "We are all good people. No one intended to do anything bad, yet we are going in and out of the public security bureau, police station, detention center and the forced labor camp. Why is that? What has this world come to?"
On October 2, 2001, to validate the Dafa, Zhan Wei went to Tiananmen Square and shouted, "Falun Dafa is good!" and "Falun Dafa is righteous!" The police arrested him. When his employer and the Yingcheng Police went to pick him up, they had to pay a fine of 10,000 Yuan before he was released to them. When he returned to his hometown, the police detained him again. He went on a hunger strike to protest this. His family wanted to visit him, but they were turned away. The reason was that Zhan Wei's appeal in Beijing affected their work evaluation. The police treated the practitioners as if they were felons facing the death penalty. They followed Jiang's directive to "ruin their reputation, bankrupt them financially, and destroy them physically." They used many means to torture Zhan Wei. They shackled his hands and legs so that he could not practice the exercises. Zhan Wei refused to cooperate with the evil. He refused to wear the prison uniform or sign any documents, and he shouted, "Falun Dafa is good!" in the cell. Every time he shouted, he was brutally beaten. During the three months he was held at the detention center, he went on three hunger strikes. The last one lasted 8 days. Since he started the hunger strike right after he arrived at the detention center and due to the fact the he was malnourished even when he was eating, he was extremely weak. The police force fed him violently after forcing him down on a board, causing numerous internal injuries. He could barely speak when he got home, after his family was notified to pick him up at 8 p.m. On January 23, 2002, he passed away as a result of the brutal torture he suffered in the forced labor camp. He had been passing blood in his urine, and he told his family that he had stomach pains. At the funeral service, those who knew Zhan Wei said, "What kind of a world is this? Such a kind-hearted man was tortured to death."
Zhan Wei's planned wedding turned into his funeral. His fianc e is still being held in a forced labor camp. A harmonious couple was destroyed by the Jiang regime's cruel persecution. This is more evidence of Jiang's atrocities against Falun Gong practitioners.
