(Clearwisdom.Net) On December 18, 2002, Falun Dafa practitioner Mr. Lu Zhiyong noticed that another Dafa practitioner was ordered to stand for a long time in the hallway (1). This practitioner told Lu that the reason was that Policeman Wang Chunlin had forced practitioners to be subjected to a brainwashing session. During the session, Wang began cursing the founder of Falun Gong, so the practitioner told him to stop and in retaliation Wang ordered the practitioner to stand for an extended period as punishment.
In the evening, policeman ZhaoYu led the brainwashing session. Zhao forced the practitioner to stand in front of everyone. That practitioner wanted to say some words to explain the facts of Falun Dafa, but Zhao prevented him and ordered other people to drag him outside. Practitioner Lu Zhiyong stood up and told Zhao that he should let others finish what they were saying. The "Cangues" (2) assigned to Mr. Lu immediately tried to subdue him. Police Zhao ordered people to drag Mr. Lu outside.
Protesting the Evil Persecution Is Not Wrong
Subsequently, a dozen policemen and guards interrogated Mr. Lu. The policemen wanted Mr. Lu to acknowledge that he had done something wrong, but Mr. Lu refused to comply. Several policemen then stripped off Mr. Lu's clothes, tied him up with a rope, and tortured him with electric batons. Mr. Lu still refused to admit that he had done something wrong. The policemen then started to use electric batons on Mr. Lu's neck, chest and other sensitive parts (4). Mr. Lu believed that as a Dafa practitioner he should stand upright and behave with dignity. So no matter how inhumanly the police tortured him, he remained firm and resolute. The police tried everything they could think of, but could not get Mr. Lu to change his mind.
On December 22, a few days later, the police forced some Falun Gong practitioners to stand for a long time in the hallway. Around 10 p.m., policeman Zhao Yu returned to the hallway. He went to Mr. Lu and ordered him to stand at attention and greet him like a soldier. Mr. Lu refused. Zhao Yu then called the guard team on his walkie-talkie. They shoved Mr. Lu to a conference room, took off his clothes, tied him up, and then tortured him with electric batons. The electric shock torture lasted for more than 40 minutes. Keeping in mind that he was a practitioner, Mr. Lu felt that he should display the dignity of a Falun Gong practitioner and therefore would not scream or moan from the pain. Realizing that their torture wasn't achieving the effect of getting Mr. Lu to renounce his belief in Falun Gong, the police put away the electric batons. They ordered Mr. Lu Zhiyong to clean the restroom. Mr. Lu would not comply with their order, so the police became exasperated and left him to continue the forced standing in the corridor.
The next day morning, in spite of the wounds he suffered, Mr. Lu finished the compulsory lap running exercises that the Labor Camp required of all detained people. Police Zhao Yu ordered Mr. Lu to write a statement admitting that he had done something wrong during the brainwashing session by refusing to comply with their orders. Mr. Lu's reply was: "Why should I!"
Do Not Sing Songs That the Labor Camp Authorities Force Us to Sing!
The labor camp forces Falun Gong practitioners to sing propaganda songs daily before each meal as part of the many layers of brainwashing they impose on practitioners. Once when several practitioners refused to sing, the guards cruelly beat them. On December 26, police ordered practitioners to sing the required songs after lunch. Policeman ZhaoYu ordered Mr. Lu to join the singing. Mr. Lu replied "No!" Zhao brought Mr. Lu to a conference room and called in the Labor Camp guards. A large and tall policeman fiercely punched Mr. Lu in the face. Several other policemen ripped off Mr. Lu's jacket and threw him on the floor. One police officer stepped on Mr. Lu's face with one foot, tied him up, and then hit Mr. Lu's back with a wooden club that was studded with sharp objects. At the same time the police interrogated Mr. Lu as to whether he would sing songs in the future and Mr. Lu's answer always remained "No." The police tortured Mr. Lu for about 40 minutes before they stopped.
Lu Zhiyong was assigned to a "strict discipline team." Those assigned to this team are forced to undergo boot camp style military training all day long as a form of persecution. Every day, practitioners were forced to stand at attention like soldiers, march in high stepping parade steps and run laps. The "Cangues" assigned to supervise the practitioners were allowed to take turns to rest, but Falun Gong practitioners were not allowed to rest. This high intensity training was designed to destroy Dafa practitioners both mentally and physically. However, every practitioner remained very firm. Having Teacher and Dafa in mind, no one renounced their belief regardless of the tricks the police used.
Afterwards the police came up with a new strategy. They made Mr. Lu Zhiyong stand by himself from 6 o'clock in the morning to 12 o'clock at night in the hallway. After Mr. Lu was forced to stand like that continuously for many days, the police thought Mr. Lu Zhiyong was unable to take anymore and would renounce his belief. They asked him to go outside and try walking. At first Mr. Lu had to be helped by two "personal cangues". Then he thought that a Dafa practitioner must have a Dafa practitioner's dignity, so he walked by himself. Although he had stood in one place for such a long time, he walked easily and his feet didn't swell up or hurt thanks to the power of Falun Dafa.
Besides standing for a long time, the police also forced Mr. Lu to scrub the restroom floor [Note: in most places in China, the toilets are open pits and not like those in Western countries; therefore cleaning these "restrooms" is quite a harsh chore] Several people pressed Mr. Lu to the floor and forced him to scrub the restroom floor back and forth with a brush or a brick. As Mr. Lu Zhiyong continued to refuse to do this undignified job, several policemen pushed his head into the open urine trough. No matter how the police tortured him, Mr. Lu Zhiyong would not comply with their demands as he felt righteously that he was not a criminal and had not committed any crime by believing in the Falun Dafa principle of Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance. Therefore, he would not cooperate with the police and they had to concede defeat.
On January 14, 2003 around dinnertime, the guards again asked Falun Gong practitioners to assemble and sing the required propaganda songs. Then a guard asked Mr. Lu whether he would sing along with others, and Mr. Lu again answered "No." Several policemen dragged Mr. Lu to a conference room and called the guard team. The police tied Mr. Lu up and used electric batons to shock his head and neck. Mr. Lu Zhiyong started to silently recite the Fa Rectification verses Teacher had taught us, and one electric baton stopped working immediately. The police then brought two electric batons and shocked Mr. Lu with both of them simultaneously. The police also attempted to force Mr. Lu to sing a propaganda song entitled, "the Party is good" and recite the labor camp rules. Mr. Lu shouted loudly "Falun Dafa is good! Falun Dafa is the righteous Fa! Buddha's light shines everywhere!" Several policemen inserted the electric baton into Mr. Lu's mouth, but Mr. Lu Zhiyong still continued to shout, "Falun Dafa is good". As more and more people stopped to watch the police actions, the police stopped as they became afraid there were too many witnesses.
The next morning, the police forced Mr. Lu to wear his clothes inside out and stand on the drill ground in an attempt to humiliate him. The police also ordered the "personal cangues" to hang rags in front of Mr. Lu's chest and put a ragged hat on his head to humiliate him. Mr. Lu recited Teacher's article "What is Forbearance" silently to himself. No matter how irrationally the police persecuted him, his determination to continue practicing Falun Dafa was as solid as a rock.
Notes:
(1) A torture method that forces the victim to stand, facing a wall for a long time. In China's labor camps, it is common that Falun Gong practitioners are forced to stand for all day long except for the time spent eating, sleeping and using the toilet, from the time s/he rises at 5 a.m. until 1 a.m. or 2 a.m. the next morning when s/he is allowed to go to bed. This abuse usually lasts several days. In some cases the victim could not withstand the intensity of prolonged standing and loses consciousness, the guards then force-fed him or her with drugs.
(2) Cangue, originally the name of a torture instrument in China that consists of a heavy wooden collar enclosing neck and arms and was used on petty criminals. This name identifies now a person who was designated to supervise the behavior of practitioners.
(3) Normally an electric baton has voltage of tens of thousands volts. When it discharges continuously, it emits blue light with a crackling sound. When the electric current goes through a person's body. It feels like one is being burned. Every shock is very painful. The victim's skin becomes burned, blistered with open wounds that can become easily infected. There are even more powerful batons with higher voltage that make the victim feel like he is being hit repeatedly with a hammer. According to the regulations for safe usage of the electric batons, the electric batons should not be applied to people's heads, chests, faces, or genital areas. However, the police in the forced labor camp purposely apply the electric batons to these areas to cause maximum pain. A normal person gives up resistance after a couple shocks. But when the police used the electric batons on Falun Gong practitioners, their purpose is to torture the practitioners to the greatest extent, so they often used ten or more batons to shock the practitioners simultaneously. They even concentrate their shocks on the head, chest and other sensitive parts and shock the practitioners on those areas for long periods.
