Two Falun Gong practitioners, Ng Chye Huay and Cheng Lujin, who practiced the Falun Gong exercises and introduced Falun Gong and the persecution happening in China at the Esplanade Park on February 23, 2003, were charged by the police in May 2004. Each of them faced eight and seven charges including "assembly without a permit" and "possessing and mailing out uncertified VCDs."
After almost one year of hearings, the Singapore court fined the two practitioners S$20,000 and $24,000 respectively on April 27, 2005. They refused to accept the verdict and wished to appeal. They were taken to the Changi Women's Prison after 6:00 p.m. They may be jailed for a maximum of 24 weeks.
Practitioners protest in front of the Singapore Consulate in Chicago
During the afternoon of April 28, 2005, Falun Gong practitioners in Chicago gathered outside the Singapore Consulate in Chicago to protest the unfair verdict against the two practitioners. They held up a banner asking Singapore not to participate in the persecution against Falun Gong. The lawyer representing practitioners, Terri Marsh, expressed that the law should protect people's rights and their freedom of speech.
Ms. Marsh wrote in her letter to the Singapore Consulate that Singapore is a country ruled by law. The law should protect people's freedom of belief and freedom of speech. The responsibility of the police is to maintain social order, and protect people from criminals. However, by arresting the two women practitioners who distributed Falun Gong truth clarification materials, the police prevented people in Singapore from learning about the truth, which is against the spirit of the law. She pointed out that while democratic countries and human rights organizations in the world pass resolutions to condemn the CCP's persecution of Falun Gong, by this action, Singapore is isolating itself from the world.
One of the Falun Gong practitioners who was protesting is an overseas Chinese who lives in Indonesia. After the Communist Party seized power, his father brought him back to China from Indonesia. He said that he had great enthusiasm to serve his country, but later found out that the communist party promulgated many lies. As a result of the lies, both he and his father were subjected to persecution. He also expressed that he hoped the Singapore government would resist the CCP's presssure. The Singapore government should correctly resolve the bringing of charges against Falun Gong practitioners as soon as possible.
