(Clearwisdom.net) One morning in January 2003, I got on a bus heading for work. It was rush hour, and the bus was packed with commuters. No sooner had the bus started up when I sensed something moving in my back pocket. Instinctively, I reached for the pocket and thought that something was missing. I took off my glove and reached into my pocket again to make sure. Yes, the bundle of cash, about 200 yuan, was gone. A thought quickly flashed across my mind, "If something is yours, you will not lose it. If something is not yours, you will not have it even if you fight for it." (Zhuan Falun)
When I pulled my hand out of my pocket to put the glove back on, someone thrust a bundle of cash into my hand. It was from a young man. I thanked him and he responded, "I'm getting off here." Two young men then hopped off the bus by the front door. Noticing what had happened, a young man standing beside me remarked, "He's returned the money!" Another passenger followed, "The two pickpockets just got off the bus!"
The incident reminds me of what Teacher says in Zhuan Falun, Lecture Three:
"When an evil-minded person is thinking of something bad, this person might change his mind due to the powerful effect of your field; he might then no longer want to commit the wrongdoing. Perhaps a person wants to swear at someone. Suddenly, he may change his mind and will not want to swear. Only the energy field from cultivation practice in a righteous way can produce this effect."
It was Teacher who helped change the minds of the pickpockets. The incident further improved my understanding of the Buddhist saying, "The Buddha-light illuminates everywhere and rectifies all abnormalities." (Zhuan Falun)
A fellow practitioner told me a story that happened last October 2005:
"It was about 6 o'clock one evening. I was strolling down the road. It was very crowded. A car sped by and I turned. It missed me by inches. Then, another heavily laden tricycle rolled past me. Apparently, its back wheel ran over my foot. I hadn't noticed and did not feel a thing.
"A woman passerby must have noticed that the vehicle ran over my foot, because she anxiously called out to me, 'Auntie, let me take you to the hospital to get your foot looked at. The injury could be serious.' The driver got off the tricycle and looked worried. But I said, 'It's all right. I was not hurt.' The woman, however, insisted that I should go to the hospital. I assured her again it was all right and that I had to leave.
"Later, I took a look at my foot. There were no bruises, just a little scratch on the skin. But that driver was scared stiff."
