Editors' Note: In both Western and Chinese culture, the principle of karmic retribution, that is, being held ultimately accountable for one's own actions, is widely accepted. The fundamental teaching of Falun Gong is the characteristic of the universe, "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance." The universe will reward actions that are in harmony with this principle, while actions such as beating, torturing and murdering people will incur karmic retribution. Stated another way, good deeds will be rewarded with good, while evildoings will meet due retribution. Articles such as this one are meant as a compassionate reminder of this principle to those who would commit wrongdoing. While many of those who persecute Falun Gong are merely "following orders," the universal law requires that they too be held responsible for their actions, and that only by reversing their course of wrongdoing may they escape retribution.
Li Guolin, in his forties, was from Qiujiagou town in the Shenbei area, Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. Around 2004, he became the head of the town and director of the security office. He frequently attended the town meetings, some of which were related to persecuting Falun Gong. Falun Gong had been persecuted for five years by that time, and many people already knew the facts about Falun Gong and were not fooled by the CCP propaganda. Because of that, many of the village officials did not follow the orders to persecute Falun Gong, and some even warned the practitioners when another wave of persecution was coming.
When Li Guolin first became the head of the town, he was anxious to use the persecution of Falun Gong for personal gain. He took several thugs every night and looked around for practitioners distributing fliers. On the night of July 22, 2004, when two female practitioners Su Fengling and Zhang Xiumei from Magang village came to Qiujiagou to distribute fliers, Li Guolin spotted them and wanted to send them to the security office. Even after the practitioners patiently clarified the truth to him, he did not listen. Instead he threatened them, "I know that Falun Gong is good. However, now the Communist Party has given the order. When they ask me to arrest people, I will do it! Retribution? I only believe in fame and gain!" At that time, many people came to see what would happen. A local driver got out of his car and tried to stop him, "I know these two women. They are both very good people. Why do you want to arrest them?" Many people started condemning Li Guolin, "Let them go. We are all fellow villagers." Seeing that he was outnumbered, he had to let the practitioners go.
However, he reported them immediately to the security office. As a result, these two practitioners were arrested by the Xinchengzi area 610 office and local security officers. They were sent to the notorious Masanjia Forced Labor Camp, where they were subjected to severe torture.
Because of his actions, Li Guolin was rewarded by Tong Shuliang, the Secretary of the Xinchengzi area Politics and Law Committee and Director of the 610 Office. He was given an award and a bonus. This was also part of the work summary report submitted by the regional 610 office.
The news of practitioners Su Fengling and Zhang Xiumei's detention spread in the local area, and everyone knew that Li Guolin had reported them. Both practitioners were main income earners in their families. They not only did farm work, but also took care of the elderly and their children. Their sentencing has caused terrible difficulties for their families, and Li Guolin was cursed by the community for his actions.
There is an old Chinese saying: kindness will be repaid with kindness and evil will be repaid with evil. On the evening of January 17, 2007, Li Guolin was riding a motorcycle to his home from Shenyang Forest Park. He was riding on a smooth road, and according to witnesses, he was going slowly. But suddenly his motorcycle flipped over for no apparent reason. Li Guolin died in the hospital.
