FDIC: Urgent Appeal: After Suffering Years of Torture, "Upstanding" Man on the Verge of Death in Chinese Prison Camp
Sept. 21: A 55-year-old man is near death after suffering years of torture at the hands of Chinese police, according to multiple reports from China.
A resident of Wuhan, Mr. Liu Yunchao (刘运潮) is being held at the Fanjiatai Prison in Shayang, Hubei Province. In July 2009, Liu was "sentenced" in a sham trial to three years in prison for practicing Falun Gong. After over a year of torture, twice in August 2010 -- on August 8 and August 30 -- Liu's family was notified that he was near death. Each time, they rushed to the prison to secure his access to a hospital and medical treatment. On both occasions, Liu was not allowed to go to the hospital.
According to family members, Liu was emaciated and unconscious.

Fifteen percent of the documented cases of Falun Gong deaths in 2009 involved practitioners who had died within two months of their latest detention.

FDIC: Sent to Prison Camp for Ten Years, Falun Gong Practitioner Dies from Torture
Sept. 13: A father of one in his mid-50's died in early August 2010, while serving a ten year "sentence" in a prison camp in northeast China, the Falun Dafa Information Center recently learned. According to sources inside China, Lu Manku (卢满库) died from torture-related injuries while in custody at the Nanguanling Prison in Dalian City, Liaoning Province. Lu had been taken into custody in early 2008 while he was making leaflets exposing the human rights abuses suffered by Falun Gong practitioners in China. On May 26, 2008, Lu was "sentenced" in a sham trial to ten years in prison.
Lu's case was one of 863 that the Information Center publicized in December 2009 (news)—Lu was case no. 45 and one of 63 Falun Gong practitioners "sentenced" in late 2008, early 2009 to at least ten years in prison (list). His death highlights the danger facing the hundreds of thousands of other imprisoned Falun Gong practitioners in China.

Human Rights in China: Lawyer Barred from Representing Client by “6-10” Agents
Sept. 10: "Human Rights in China (HRIC) has learned from Beijing lawyer Wang Yajun (王雅军) that he was barred by agents of the so-called '6-10 Office' in Siping, Jilin Province, from representing a Falun Gong practitioner. Wang’s client, Du Lihua (杜丽华), ... was tried on September 10 without a lawyer in his defense.
Wang said that on September 9, when he arrived in the Yitong Man Autonomous County Court, he was told by three men that, due to the 'special circumstances in Jilin,' there are clear rules stipulating that 'lawyers from outside may not represent this kind of case, meet with the accused, enter the court room to defend the client, or make photocopies of court documents.' Wang said that the men, including a Secretary Cui of the Party Committee of Political and Legal Affairs, who identified themselves as from the county 6-10 office, told him that if he 'dared go into the court, they would use forcible measures.' Wang said that when he demanded to see the rules to which the men referred, the men told him that the documents were secret, and refused to give him even the document numbers.

Wall Street Journal blog: Falun Gong among topics barred from citizen questions to Party leaders
Sept. 14: "A new online message board hosted on the website of the Chinese Communist Party’s mouthpiece newspaper People’s Daily is offering anyone the ability to post messages for China’s top leaders. Called 'Direct Line to Zhongnanhai'—a reference to the closely-guarded compound in Beijing that houses party chief Hu Jintao and other Middle Kingdom bigwigs—the message board at last makes it possible for regular Chinese to engage in open and honest debate with the men at the controls. Or maybe not.
As advocacy group Human Rights in China (HRIC) points out in a response to the launch of the message board, an instruction manual posted in the board’s help section lists 26 different categories of banned content. ...No. 6, for example, bans any message that “advocates heretical organizations or feudal superstitions”—a reference to groups like Falun Gong..."
