Ms. Zhao started practicing Falun Gong in March 1996, and exprienced improvements to her health. After the onset of the persecution of Falun Gong, in 2000 Ms. Zhao appealed for justice for Falun Gong in Tianmen Square, Beijing. She was arrested and illegally detained for more than 20 days. The police brutally beat her, giving her a concussion.
Ms. Zhao was arrested again at home in March 2006, and subjected to two years of forced labor. While being held in Beijing Women's Forced Labor Camp, she developed symptoms of cerebral thrombosis and diabetes as a result of physical abuse and mistreatment.
