(Clearwisdom.net) Wang Xuehao, head of the Department of Liver Surgery at the Jiangsu Province People's Hospital, has performed 14 live-donor liver transplants in recent years. Sources of the livers are unidentified.
Wang Xuehao, male, 69 (born in 1942), an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, currently heads the Department of Liver Surgery at the Jiangsu Province People's Hospital. Reports indicate that Wang Xuehao has retired, but still participates in two surgeries per week.
Between 1983 and 1986, Wang Xuehao did research and studied liver transplantation and liver surgery techniques at the Liver Transplant Center of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He performed the first live-donor liver transplantation in China in January 1995.
Over the past ten years, he has presided over and completed more than 460 liver transplants, which account for approximately 50 percent of all the liver transplants done in Jiangsu Province. He has completed 50 live-donor liver transplants, among which 14 were adult live-donor liver transplants.
(1) In January 2001, he performed a live-donor liver transplantation for a child who was suffering from liver degeneration.
(2) In June 2001, within six days, he performed three major surgeries for a six-year-old patient, including live-donor liver transplantation, hepatic artery reconstruction, and reduced-size liver transplantation.
(3) In February 2002, he performed the first emergent right lobe adult living donor liver transplantation in China, for a patient who was suffering from acute liver failure accompanied by grade 4 hepatic encephalopathy (brain disease).
(4) Treats liver degeneration with live-donor liver transplantation.
(5) Ranks No. 1 in China for the number of completed living-donor liver transplants.
In the past five years, the liver transplant center of the Jiangsu Province People's Hospital has become China's living donor liver transplant center, and in April 2005, the Chinese Ministry of Health approved setting up the Living Donor Liver Transplant Institute of China. Wang and his aides have helped Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Guangdong, Shandong, Anhui, Hebei, and more than ten other provinces and cities to perform living donor liver transplantation.
The liver sources, however, for all the live-donor liver transplants that Wang Xuehao has performed have not been identified. Especially in the past 12 years, due to the large number of facts showing that China's hospitals have removed organs from living Falun Gong practitioners to complete the live organ transplants, Wang's living donor liver transplantation needs further investigation. Moreover, what Wang said about doing living donor liver transplantation is worrisome. He said, "To this end, I've prepared for the worst." He told his students, "If one day, I'm imprisoned because of the dispute for doing live donor liver transplantation, it will be alright if you can remember to deliver meals for me."
Investigation Lead: Doctor Zhou Jie from the Nanfang Hospital of Guangzhou participates in live-donor liver transplantation
Zhou Jie, male, 46, head of the Department of Liver and Gallbladder Surgery, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University
Zhou Jie, since 2004, has led the department staff in carrying out liver transplantation. To date, the total number of cases has reached 200. In July 2010, Zhou Jie led department personnel to carry out living-donor liver transplantation, and Nanfang Hospital has become one of the few transplant centers in China that has mastered the technology. Zhou Jie, the first to write about the technology, has published more than 60 papers, edited and published a book, and obtained eight projects supported by Chinese National Natural Science Foundation and Guangdong Province Scientific and Technological Projects Foundation. The funding received totals nearly one million yuan. It is said that his academic status and live transplants he performs are at the forefront of liver and gallbladder surgery in China. However, because Zhou Jie has done so much live-donor liver transplantation, the sources of the living donors used needs further investigation.
