On March 27, 2012, Falun Gong practitioners Mr. Zhang Maoyuan and his wife, Ms. Feng Jinhua, were arrested by officers from the Zhangjialou Police Station. The couple is from Xiaohedong Village, Jiaonan, Qingdao, Shandong Province.
Mr. Zhang Maoyuan's father, Zhang Shengbao, is paralyzed and bedridden, and his mother is blind. There is no one to look after his parents now, and the elderly couple cry every day for their children.
After Mr. Zhang and Ms. Feng were arrested, the Jiaonan 610 Office took them to prison numerous times, but the couple was released due to health problems. They were then held in the Jiaonan Detention Center and subjected to forced labor. In May of 2013, they were given seven-year prison sentences and held in Jinan Prison.
Mr. Zhang Maoyuan, 49, was employed at the No. 11 Wood Factory in Jiaonan. He worked hard and was honest. Ms. Feng Jinhua, 50, taught Chinese at Jiaonan Experimental Primary School on the Haizhiyun campus. In Xiaohedong Village, the couple was known for their devotion to their parents, having cared for their disabled parents for years.
Whenever the elderly parents see their grandson, they ask, “When will your father be coming home?” They miss the couple very much and cry daily.
Arrested Together and Held in Detention Centers
On March 27, 2013, at around noon when Mr. Zhang Maoyuan came home after his shift, eight police officers were waiting for him at his door. His wife was arrested that morning at her school, and the police had come to raid their home.
After Mr. Zhang realized what the police planned to do he said, “What is wrong with practicing Falun Gong and living according to the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance?” The police ransacked his home anyway. They took a computer, printer, and other personal belongings. They also took Mr. Zhang away as he was feeding his disabled father.
Jiaonan 610 Office agents interrogated Mr. Zhang and his wife to find Falun Gong truth-clarifying materials in their home. Later Mr. Zhang was sent to Jiaonan Detention Center and his wife to Dashan Detention Center in Qingdao (it moved to Pudong County, Jimo City). However, the detention center refused to accept Ms. Feng because she had developed hypertension. Jiaonan 610 Office agents then took her to the Jinan Brainwashing Center and later transferred her to the Dashan Detention Center.
The disabled parents now have no one to take care of them, and people in the village decry the police for their inhumanity.
Mr. Zhang and Ms. Feng are from Xiaohedong Village, Jiaonan City. Mr. Zhang's father is an 85-year-old disabled soldier who been paralyzed for over 12 years. Mr. Zhang's mother is 87 and has been completely blind for years. The elderly couple totally rely on Mr. Zhang and his wife for their care, including feeding and personal hygiene.
After the couple was arrested, the parents were locked in their room for two days with nothing to eat. Other relatives learned this and visited. During the visit, the elderly couple cried and asked, “Where is our son? Why doesn't he cook for us anymore?” The relatives and the whole village cried with them.
Mr. Zhang Taken to Prison Three Times, Released Due to Health Problems, Still Held in Detention Center
On August 6, 2012, after five months in detention, the Jiaonan Court brought Mr. Zhang Maoyuan to trial. Several other Falun Gong practitioners were there as well: Geng Dexiao, Yin Qiye, and Li Qibing. On orders from the Jiaonan 610 Office, the family received no notification of the hearing. To justify a heavy sentence, a Falun Gong informational booklet was produced as "evidence." The court sentenced Mr. Zhang to seven years in prison.
The first time Mr. Zhang was sent to Jinan Prison on October 16, 2012, he was returned to the detention center after only seven days because of a severe health problem. Jinan Detention Center continued to hold him without notifying his family.
On January 17 2013, he was transferred to Jinan Prison a second time. He was examined and told he had a tumor in his abdomen. The prison again refused to admit him. The Jiaonan 610 Office and Jiaonan Detention Center refused his family's request for medical parole and continue to hold Mr. Zhang, who is being forced to do slave labor. He has never been allowed to have visitors. There is no information regarding his interrogation or physical abuse.
In May of 2013, Mr. Zhang was transferred to Jinan Prison a third time. His family never received notice of any of these attempts.
What Is Known about Ms. Feng Jinhua
Ms. Feng was arrested on March 27, 2012, while she was teaching at her school. Because she was diagnosed with severe hypertension, Dashan Detention Center refused to admit her. She was then taken to Jinan Brainwashing Center on April 10, 2012. She was arrested again on April 25, 2012, and held in Dashan Detention Center.
On August 23, 2013, at around 10 a.m., Jiaonan judiciary authorities brought Ms. Feng Jinhua, Zhang Shuxin, Zhang Shuwen and Chen Yuzhen to trial. The family was not notified until immediately before the hearing. All four practitioners were handcuffed and exhibited varying degrees of injury.
Judge Liu Jinren conducted a hasty trial, adjourning in less than an hour, further evidence of the CCP's disregard for the law.
Ms. Feng Jinhua filed an appeal shortly afterward but was notified by the prison that Falun Gong cases are not allowed to be appealed and that it was useless to try. She was sentenced to seven years in prison in May of 2013 and is now in Shandong Women's No. 1 Prison.
