Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Wang Guiqi was arrested on November 21, 2012, and secretly tried on March 21, 2013, in the Tanggu District Court.
Mr. Wang's lawyers went to the court on April 25 and May 8, 2013; submitted a written “Legal Opinion” suggesting a second hearing of Mr. Wang's case; and requested that it be held publicly. The court officials failed to respond. After the family was notified of Mr. Wang's four-and-a-half-year prison sentence on July 29, 2013, his lawyers again went to the Tanggu District Court on August 1 and filed an appeal requesting a second hearing.
Mr. Wang is from Daliangzi in the Tanggu District in Tianjin City. He is a former thermal power station technician at the Tanggu District Dagu Chemical Industry. His father passed away when he was young, and, as the oldest son of the family, Mr. Wang has taken on the responsibility of supporting his family.
Previous Arrests and Incarcerations
In the past more than 10 years since the Chinese regime launched the persecution of Falun Gong, Mr. Wang has been illegally arrested twice and detained for a total of 30 days. He was sentenced to forced labor twice for a total of four years. He has now again been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison.
His wife, Ms. Yin Guanghua, also a Falun Gong practitioner, was arrested in March 2011 and was detained at the Zhaojiadi Detention Center. In November of the same year, Ms. Yin was secretly tried in the Tanggu District Court and sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison. She was transferred on December 8, 2011, to the Tianjin Women's Prison, where she remains. The imprisonment of both Mr. Wang and his wife has meant that there is no one to care for his 80-year-old paralyzed mother.
Details on His Current Situation
Mr. Wang was arrested on November 21, 2012, by officer Li Zhenmin from the Tanggu District Domestic Security Division. Li was working with officers Feng Zhiping and Zheng Kaiyan from the Hangzhoudao Police Station, officer Si Dongwei from the Daliangzi Police Station, and officials of his local Community Residential Committee. His home was ransacked and the police confiscated more than 10,000 yuan in cash, which was later returned.
His elderly mother and other family members have gone to the appropriate government agencies many times to explain the situation and appeal for his release. The Chinese government officials, however, evaded responsibility and even told the family to “sue the court.”
Without notifying the family and without his consent, Mr. Wang was secretly tried in the Tanggu District Court on March 21, 2013. He was assigned a lawyer and was not allowed to defend himself. The two lawyers his family had hired made special trips to Tianjin on April 25 and May 8, 2013, and asked to view the dossier in order to objectively and comprehensively perform their duties and defend their client. The lawyers also submitted a formal “Legal Opinion,” suggesting a second hearing of Mr. Wang's case. Trial judge Li Hongliang from the Tanggu District Court claimed that the case had been submitted to the Intermediate Court and did nothing to arrange for the lawyers to view the files.
The family received notification of Mr. Wang's four-and-a-half-year prison sentence on July 29, 2013. His lawyers went to the Tanggu District Court on August 1 and filed an appeal on his behalf.
Mr. Wang is now in the Zhaojiadi Detention Center in the Tanggu District.
