Mr. Xiao Yuanxin, a Falun Gong practitioner from Dalian City, was arrested for his spiritual belief in August 2013. Phone calls from China and overseas demanding his release have flooded the police station since then.
Mr. Xia was arrested at home in Jinzhou District at 9:30 a.m. on August 24, 2013. He was cornered by four plainclothes officers as he stepped out. They forced their way into Mr. Xia's home and called for four more officers. Without producing any identification or warrant, the police ransacked Mr. Xia's home and confiscated his personal belongings, including cash, recording the search on video.
Mr. Xia, his wife Ms. Su Zhengqiu and their daughter were taken to the Guangming Police Station. As they were leaving Mr. Xia's apartment, the police attempted to cover Mr. Xia's handcuffed hands.
Mr. Xia told them: “You don't have to cover my hands. I am in my 60s and believe in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance [the main principles of Falun Gong]. You have put me in handcuffs because of that. I am not ashamed. The shame is on you.”
Mr. Xia's wife and daughter were subsequently released. His family visited the police station several times, demanding his release and return of his personal belongings, but to no avail. When Mr. Xia's daughter came to the station, policeman Liu Jie, responsible for the arrest, rudely pushed her out of the reception area.
Mr. Xia's 94-year-old mother-in-law has been anxiously awaiting Mr. Xia's return. She said: “My best son-in-law has been arrested. They must have gotten the wrong person.” When she went to the police station on September 9, policeman Liu Jie called her “shameless,” which was very hurtful to her. She could not understand why the police were so rude.
Liu Jie has gotten many phone calls regarding Mr. Xia's unlawful arrest, from within China and abroad. He complained, “My phone has been ringing off the hook.” The calls from overseas especially agitated him.
Jinzhou Domestic Security Division chief Guo Lin said: “The deadline for this case is September 23. We hope to resolve it quickly, as my phone is ringing off the hook.”
The other two policemen involved in the arrest were Bian Jiang and Liu Yang.
