(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioners Ms. Liu Xiuzhen, Mr. Yang Naijian, and Mr. Feng Hua were tried by the Chengyang District Court in Qingdao City at 9 a.m. on February 28, 2014. About 40 officers from the Chengyang Police Department were present to prevent the practitioners' relatives and attorneys from attending and defending them.
Mr. Yang's relatives and his attorneys, Zhang Weiyun and Jiang Tianyong, as well as Ms. Liu's relatives went to the Pudong Town Detention Center prior to the trial. The attorneys, Mr. Yang's father, and his aunt and uncle asked to attend the proceedings, but the police wouldn't let them.
When the three practitioners were taken from the courthouse, policemen lined up along either side and military police ran back and forth. The police and armed police didn't leave until after the practitioners had been taken away.
Attorney Jiang Tianyong shouted at the police vehicle, “You will be held responsible for disregarding the law! History will judge you!” Attorney Zhang Weiyun shouted, “Mr. Yang Naijian, be strong! Your attorneys are backing you up!”
Attorneys Prevented from Defending Their Clients
The Qingdao 610 Office ordered police to arrest practitioners Ms. Lu Xueqin, Ms. Cui Luning, Mr. Yang Naijian, Mr. Feng Hua, Ms. Liu Xiuzhen, and Mr. Li Hao on May 2, 2013, charging them with “an illegal gathering.”
CCTV and the Xinhua website, both controlled by the Chinese Communist Party, announced on June 4, 2013, that Qingdao police had solved an "important case" involving photographing re-enactments of Falun Gong practitioners being tortured in prison, claiming that revealing such torture was a crime.
First, the attorneys were not allowed to see the detained practitioners, then the government changed the charges against them. During this time, Mr. Yang was tortured.
Mr. Yang Naijian, Mr. Feng Hua, and Ms. Liu Xiuzhen were prosecuted by the Chengyang District Procuratorate.
Short Notice for Trial
Mr. Yang and Ms. Liu's families received a notice from the Chengyang District Court at 4:53 p.m. on February 27, 2014, that the trial was set for 10 a.m. the next day at the Pudong Town Detention Center in Jimo City. Ms. Liu's attorney in Shenyang City could not make it for the trial due to the short notice. According to existing Chinese law, the court should notify the attorneys and families at least three days ahead of the trial date.
Attorney Zhang Weiyun saw Mr. Yang at 2 p.m. on the day of the trial. He was made aware that Mr. Yang had heart problems and an irregular heartbeat causing shortness of breath. Even though Mr. Yang's blood pressure was 130 mmHg, the guards forced him to take drugs.
Hao Dongsong, the director of the public prosecution section of the Chengyang Procuratorate, and prosecutor Yu Peijuan not only ignored Mr. Yang's family's request to investigate the torture inside the detention center, proven by photos, but also brought new false charges against Mr. Yang.
Attorneys Zhang Weiyun and Jiang Tianyong and Mr. Yang's family submitted their appeal documents to Chengyang District Court around 3:30 p.m. Judge Wang Ning refused to accept them. In the end, secretary Sun Xiaoguang accepted the documents. The two attorneys intended to meet with the presiding judge Hu Xuqing (his title is "deputy court director") but they didn't see him until the court closed for the day at 5 p.m.
