(Minghui.org) Ms. Che Guoping of Dezhou City was on her way home from work on May 22, 2017, when more than ten officers seized her.
The Huaneng Power Company employee was targeted because she shared on social media an audio file containing information about Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline being persecuted by the Chinese communist regime.
The arresting officers, including Li Haiyang and Ji Jiajun, proceeded to ransack Ms. Che’s home. They confiscated more than ten cell phones, one iPad, and other personal belongings.
Ms. Che was first taken to Hexi Police Station and later moved to Dezhou City Detention Center, where she remains. She appeared in Decheng District Court on November 9, 2017. One of her relatives testified in her defense.
The relative argued that no law in China criminalizes Falun Gong and that Ms. Che had every right to distribute information about Falun Gong on social media. He also shared how Ms. Che and her family had been persecuted for refusing to renounce Falun Gong since the persecution began in 1999.
Ms. Che was first arrested in 2003 when she was still nursing her four-month-old baby. Police didn’t release her until she paid 20,000 yuan. Her brother served a total of five years of forced labor. Her father, Mr. Che Xianqi, and her mother, Ms. Hu Qinlan, were each given three years of forced labor. Ms. Hu’s health declined during her detention, and she passed away just a few years after her release.
Prosecutor Cui Jifeng recommended a heavy prison sentence for Ms. Che. Judge Liu Yinjiang sentenced Ms. Che to three and a half years and fined her 5,000 yuan in December 2017.
Ms. Che is appealing the sentence.
