(Minghui.org) A 77-year-old woman was sentenced to a year and a half in prison for talking to people about Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline being persecuted by the Chinese communist regime.
Ms. Han Lan, who is retired from the Changchun City Motor Company, was arrested on August 13, 2016. At the time, she had just had all her teeth removed and was waiting to have implants in the coming days. Despite that, the police took her to Changchun City Fourth Detention Center, where she subsisted on milk and porridge.
Having been misled by the slanderous propaganda against Falun Gong, Ms. Han’s three daughters refused to hire a lawyer to defend their mother.
Ms. Han testified in her own defense during the trial on October 15. She argued that no law in China criminalizes Falun Gong and that she had every right to raise awareness of the illegal persecution of Falun Gong.
Ms. Han was sentenced to prison ten days later and transferred to Jilin Province Women’s Prison in early 2017.
Ms. Han’s husband, who suffered from seizures and spinocerebellar atrophy, was only able to recognize her, not even their daughters. Her arrest took a toll on his already fragile health, and he passed away around mid-April of this year at the age of 79.
Ms. Han wasn’t allowed to see her husband one last time.
