(Minghui.org) I was born into a poor rural family. Determined to lead a better life, I studied hard and gained admittance to nursing college. After graduation, I found a job in the city’s main hospital, married a military officer and gave birth to a son. At this point, my happy life began to fall apart. I started showing symptoms of post-natal depression and my physical health began to decline. I took large quantities of medication for arthritis, gastritis, insomnia and cardiac arrhythmia. Because of my poor health, I was unable to cope with my workload and had to request a transfer to another ward, which had fewer patients.
In 1999, I obtained a copy of Zhuan Falun and started practicing Falun Dafa. My life and health immediately changed for the better and I happily continued cultivation practice until the persecution of Falun Dafa began a few months later. At that point I did, however, decide to continue practicing and prove to those around me that Falun Dafa is good.
Talking to Hospital Patients about Falun Dafa
The majority of the patients I care for were demanding elderly retired cadres. After practicing Falun Dafa, I started taking a blood pressure monitor with me whenever I went on ward rounds. While taking my patient’s blood pressure, I would engage them in conversation and sometimes even measure blood pressure for visiting family members. Because the other nurses were curt and impatient, I won over many patients with my kind and helpful attitude. They began looking forward to my shift and some even ventured to ask, “Why are you so kind to us?” I would reply, “It is because I am a Falun Dafa practitioner. We strive to apply the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance to become good people.”
On hearing my reply, these shocked patients would take my hand and gently advise me, “Child, don’t do this. You can see how dangerous it is for Falun Dafa practitioners now. You have a good job, a young son and a wonderful family. Why take the risk?” I would patiently reply, “It is because of Falun Dafa that I now treat others with such kindness. Falun Dafa teaches people how to become good citizens, exactly the opposite of the propaganda you see on television!” In this way, many of my patients learned the truth behind the persecution of Falun Dafa.
Applying the Principles of Cultivation Practice
One night, a patient was suddenly admitted to our hospital. As patient wards were graded according to fees, I asked the patient’s son how much he paid for the ward. The patient’s son immediately lost his temper. “Don't talk to me about money! Quickly find my father a bed!” I rushed to settle the elderly man in a good ward. Because I was a Dafa practitioner, I remained calm despite the verbal abuse, rationalizing that the man was likely facing financial difficulties and had lashed out from the stress and frustration. I followed the doctor’s advice and quickly administered medication to the elderly patient. The patient's condition soon improved and his son’s anger changed to gratitude.
Days later, I learned that my guess had been spot on. The patient’s son had indeed lost a large sum of money doing business. His anxiety was further compounded when his father fell ill and had to be rushed to the hospital. Before practicing Falun Dafa, I would have angrily retaliated in response to his unreasonable demands. Because I applied the teachings of Dafa I was able to stay calm and provide the elderly man with timely treatment. The man’s son was then reassured that his father’s life was no longer in danger.
Nowadays, medical staff-patient relationships are fraught with difficulties. I am always determined to provide the best care possible for all patients under my charge. I go the extra mile to understand each patient's medical condition, alert the doctors each time I notice any change, and work quickly to administer medication and treatment when needed. My dedication has earned the respect of many doctors and patients in the hospital.
Convincing Others of the Goodness of Falun Dafa
One of our hospital departments once suffered a personnel shortage. The head of my department was asked to provide a temporary loan of one nurse from his staff. Because the wards of that department had many more patients, nurses were required to work harder. None of my colleagues were willing to go. Left with no choice, my boss approached me and I agreed without hesitation.
My new department had a total of 50 patients under their care. At the start of my shift, I visited each patient, asked them for details of their medical condition, and took their blood pressure. Many patients were pleasantly surprised and asked if I was new. I explained that I had been temporarily transferred to help in the ward. I jotted down each patient’s condition in my notebook and used it to give a detailed report during handover the following morning.
Because of the persecution of Falun Dafa, many hospital staff harbored misconceptions about the practice. Because I wanted to convince them of the goodness of Falun Dafa, I did my best to apply the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance in my actions and words. My efforts were not in vain. In this case, my meticulousness so impressed the doctor in charge of that department that she quietly confided in my colleague a few years later, “The reason she treats her patients so well is because she practices Falun Dafa.”
After a few days, the head nurse of the department approached me. She expressed understanding and support for my belief in Falun Dafa, and asked if I was willing to remain in her department. I smiled and told her I would leave that decision to the hospital management. I returned to my original department ten days later, but during a department dinner, my boss proudly told everyone that many patients from that ward had told the hospital director, “We have never seen such a good nurse.”
