(Minghui.org) A 75-year-old Tianjin woman has been hospitalized several times since she was taken to Tianjin Women's Prison two years ago for refusing to renounce Falun Gong, a mind-body cultivation practice based on the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.
At Tianjin Women's Prison, a place notorious for inhumane mistreatment of Falun Gong practitioners, Ms. Gong Wenyu was forced to work for nearly 12 hours a day and given only 10 minutes for each meal. The authorities subjected her to intensive brainwashing in their attempts to force her to give up her faith.
She was most recently checked into the prison hospital in July 2018, having been discharged only four months ago. The prison said she had an oral condition, but more details about her physical condition remain to be investigated.
Ms. Gong's ordeal dates back to her arrest in August 2015 for filing a criminal complaint against former communist regime leader Jiang Zemin, who ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999.
The police released her on bail after her family signed a guarantee statement not to practice Falun Gong on her behalf.
Ms. Gong was taken back into custody during the 2016 Chinese New Year after she was reported to police for talking to people about Falun Gong.
She suffered from a stroke while being detained at Xiqing District Detention Center. The police extorted large amounts of money from her family on several occasions to cover her medical bills.
Despite her extremely weak physical condition, Hexi District Court ordered her to stand trial and sentenced her to 4.5 years in prison. She was taken to Tianjin Women's Prison in November 2016.
She had previously served three years in the same prison between 2006 and 2009 for refusing to renounce Falun Gong.
