(Minghui.org) A Chongqing woman was recently sentenced to seven years and two months in prison and fined 10,000 yuan for practicing Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the communist regime since 1999.
The local Shapingba District Procuratorate had initially rejected Ms. Miao Jianhua's case for insufficient evidence, but the police later got her charged by counting each 13-page calendar confiscated from her home as 13 separate pieces of evidence against her.
The calendars featured messages detailing the persecution of Falun Gong. With the added “evidence,” the police re-submitted Ms. Miao's case to the Jiangbei District Procuratorate, which accepted it and moved it to Jiangbei District Court.
Ms. Miao's hearing was held on August 30, 2018. Her lawyer pled “not guilty” on her behalf and she also defended herself. The judge announced the verdict on December 12, 2018.
Ms. Miao was arrested on September 30, 2017, after the police found out where she lived from the monitored cellphone of another Falun Gong practitioner who had visited her shortly before being arrested herself.
The police ransacked Ms. Miao's residence without a search warrant and held her in the Qingmuguan Detention Center while pressing charges against her.
