(Minghui.org) Ms. Weng Ping’s daughter found her unconscious at home on April 30, 2017. The younger woman rushed her mother to ER, but it was too late and Ms. Weng passed away two days later.
Ms. Weng’s death came less than seven months after she finished serving 1 year and 4 months in prison for refusing to renounce Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline being persecuted by the Chinese communist regime.
Ms. Weng, born in 1955, was arrested on June 2, 2015 and sentenced to prison on September 18, 2016. While she was awaiting trial at Changning Detention Center, she developed severe health problems, including high blood pressure and gallstones. Her family requested that she be released on medical parole, but the local authorities kept her detained. By the time she was released, she had lost a third of her body weight.
Ms. Weng’s last arrest was preceded by years of tight surveillance by her employer, Shanghai Turbine Company. Ms. Weng used to work in the CEO’s office, and she often felt stressed out and had a bad temper due to her demanding job. Her colleagues, however, noticed a big change in her after she began practicing Falun Gong in 1996. She no longer greeted them with impatience or a frown. She herself once said that practicing Falun Gong was a turning point in her life, as the practice enabled her to become a calmer and healthier person.
Ms. Weng’s pursuit of a stress-free life was met with intimidation and harassment after the persecution began on July 20, 1999. Because she refused to renounce Falun Gong, her company demoted her to a low-level position working in a tool shop. They also had people monitor her every day until her retirement. She moved in with her daughter after she retired. She was arrested in December 2014 and detained for six days. Not long after her release, she was seized by police again on June 2, 2015.
