(Minghui.org) The Qingyang District Court in Chengdu City recently sentenced Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Yi Wenjun to eight years in prison and Ms. Tan Shunbi to eight and a half years for refusing to give up their faith in Falun Gong. The spiritual practice has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since 1999.
Ms. Yi was tried on the morning of June 12, 2019. During the trial, whenever Ms. Yi said, “Please show the evidence.” or “Which article of the Constitution or Criminal Law has Falun Gong violated?” the presiding judge would stop her. One juror said that Ms. Yi was stubborn. The prosecutor threatened her lawyer, saying, “You are endangering yourself with your statements.”
That afternoon, the same judge tried Ms. Tan in the same courtroom. She was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison.
Ms. Tan Shunbi was arrested on January 15, 2018, after being reported for talking about Falun Gong to man cleaning a park and giving him a pamphlet.
Lu Tianfei from the Wangjiaguai Police Station, along with 12 officers in plainclothes, went to her home. Without showing any identification or a search warrant, they ransacked it. They seized personal belongings and about 9,000 yuan in cash. They arrested her and her husband, Mr. Yu Kaixin. Her husband was released after being detained for a month, only to be detained again for eight months a few months later.
