(Minghui.org) When Ms. Liu Xiaolian, a Chibi City, Hubei Province resident, was detained for the fourth time in April 2006 for practicing Falun Gong, instead of keeping her at a detention center, officials took her directly to the local Pufang Mental Hospital.
“I was injected with unknown drugs intravenously for 24 hours. My entire body turned dark and I lost consciousness for two days. When I came to, I couldn’t speak...” she wrote in an article submitted to Minghui.org.
She was arrested for the fifth time in September 2006 and held at the Pufang Mental Hospital again, where she was often force-fed, shocked with electric batons, and drugged with unknown substances. This was the worst abuse Ms. Liu ever had to endure.
Blood had previously seeped out of her pores and formed scars on her skin, but this time her entire body swelled up and her skin became opaque. When she was taken to a hospital for an ultrasound, the doctor was shocked to see that her heart was so damaged that the ventricles were unable to close.
Ms. Liu died on the afternoon of October 26, 2008. Shortly afterward, an officer from the Chibi City 610 Office placed a call to local officials, congratulating them on her death.
The 610 Office is an extralegal agency tasked with eradicating Falun Gong and given the power to override law enforcement and the judicial system.
During the past 20 years of the brutal persecution of Falun Gong in China, a large number of practitioners have been detained, imprisoned, and tortured for their belief in the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. Besides physical torture and forced labor, psychiatric abuse and forced organ harvesting are also widely applied.
A recent report published on Minghui.org documented 11 cases of Beijing practitioners being drugged to death. This new report presents another collection of such cases.
A Horrifying Crime
Below are 20 cases in which Falun Gong practitioners were intentionally drugged while in police custody and later dying from the drugs. The ages of these practitioners, 13 of them female, range between 28 and 68, with an average of 42 years old. These cases occurred between June 2000, less than one year after the persecution started, and April 2016 – an indication that this crime has taken place throughout the suppression.
What's more astonishing is where these injections occurred. Among these cases, five took place in regular hospitals, and six in mental hospitals, meaning that these healthcare facilities have been turned into killing facilities.
Among the remaining nine cases, four occurred in labor camps, one in a prison, two in prison hospitals, one in a police hospital, and one in a 610 brainwashing center. This indicates that the intentional poisoning of practitioners is widely spread across both China's justice system and extralegal system (including brainwashing centers), and yet no officials were held responsible in any of the cases.
What makes the process even more brutal is the inhumane manner – and often, the blasé attitude – with which this poisoning is carried out.
* When Ms. Xu Decun was sent to Zaozhuang Hospital in Shandong Province on September 1, 2013, a doctor announced abruptly, “We will treat her with the drugs for Falun Gong!”
* When Ms. Gong Hui from Tianjin City was kept at Banqiao Women's Labor Camp in September 17, 2008, other inmates saw that the water given to Falun Gong practitioners had additives in it. These nerve-damaging drugs caused numbness and mental breakdowns.
* After Mr. Chang Yongfu was psychiatrically abused at Dongxing Mental Hospital and Puning Mental Hospital, his face became deformed and his nose was swollen. In addition to insomnia and a mental disorder, his vision deteriorated quickly and he became fully blind before his death.
* When Ms. Zhang Fuzhen, 38, was taken in by a 610 Office brainwashing center, the police removed all her clothing, shaved her hair, and tied her naked to a bed with her legs apart. An officer injected her with an unknown substance. She struggled in extreme pain and died in the bed, while officers from the 610 Office observed the entire process.
* When Ms. Cao Yuanru, 35, was sent to Baoding Mental Hospital due to a fever, a doctor said, “Falun Gong? Feel free to leave; we know how to take care of this.” After being poisoned to death the next day, her entire body became purplish with signs of nasal and oral bleeding. She left behind a four-month-old daughter.
* At Mengyin Hospital in Shandong Province, Zhang Dezhen, 38, was beaten and force-fed, as well as injected with unknown substances. After she died on January 31, 2003, one day prior to the Chinese New Year, a police officer said, “There goes another one.”
While these cases highlight the severity of the persecution, they are only the tip of the iceberg when compared to the scale of this massive, 20-year-long persecution.
Case 1: Dead Within Two Days in Mental Hospital
Ms. Rong Fengxian, 32, was a farmer in Baoding City, Hebei Province. She was modest, kind, and well-respected in her community.
On May 11, 2001, Ms. Rong was sent to Beishi District Brainwashing Center. Because of her belief in Falun Gong and the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, she was put into solitary confinement. In the afternoon of May 17, she became weak and was sent to Baoding Mental Hospital. Her family members were told to leave her, and afterward she was injected with unknown drugs. Ms. Rong died in the hospital the next day.
Officials said that Ms. Rong died when she fell from her bed. They paid 7,000 yuan to her family as compensation.
Case 2: Poisonous Injection for Nine Days
Mr. Su Gang, 32, was a computer engineer at Sinopec Qilu, a company located in Zibo City, Shandong Province. He received a bachelor's degree in computer science from Shandong University, the top-ranked university in Shandong Province. Because of his beliefs, the police took him to Changle Mental Hospital on May 23, 2000. The medical staff there injected a large amount of nerve-damaging drugs into his body.
By the time the police returned Mr. Su to his father at 6:00 p.m. on May 31, Mr. Su looked pale and felt numb. In addition to slow reaction time and stiff movement, he was extremely weak. He died on the morning of June 10, 2000.
Case 3: She Walked 17 Days to Beijing to Appeal and Died in a Mental Hospital
Ms. Ma Yanfang, an employee of Zhucheng City Ceramics Factory in Shandong Province, began to practice Falun Gong in 1998. After the persecution started, she walked to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in April 2000 with only 10 yuan on her person. On the road, she drank water from rivers, ate cold steamed buns, and slept on the side of the road at night. When she ran out of money, she had to sell her own hair for 9 yuan. In the end, she traveled on foot for about 400 miles and arrived in Beijing in 17 days.
Upon being arrested, Ms. Ma was taken back and detained at her workplace. Because she protested by holding a hunger strike, workplace officials sent her to Zhucheng Mental Hospital. Doctors there gave her psychiatric drugs, which led to her death two months later at the hospital in September 2000.
Case 4: Dying in Front of 610 Officers After Lethal Injection
Ms. Zhang Fuzhen, 38, was a former employee of Xianhe Park in Pingdu City, Shandong Province. After going to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in November 2000, she was arrested and taken back to Pingdu City. Police officers removed all her clothing, shaved her hair, and tied her to a bed, naked, with her legs spread apart.
After an officer injected her with an unknown substance, Ms. Zhang began to convulse violently and soon died. Agents from various 610 Offices watched the entire process.
Case 5: Paralyzed after Being Drugged
Ms. Sun Hongyan, 28, was a teacher at Yutuo Town Middle School in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. After the suppression started in July 1999, she went to Beijing twice to appeal for Falun Gong. She was arrested and sent to Longshan Labor Camp in Shenyang City.
Ms. Sun was later moved to Shenyang First Prison Hospital, where she was forcibly injected with drugs. Not long after that she became paralyzed and incontinent. In March 2001, officials stamped her fingerprints on documents that defamed Falun Gong, even though she was unconscious at the time.
When Ms. Sun's family picked her up, she was on the verge of death with festering wounds over her entire body. She died around ten days after that.
Case 6: “I Was Injected with Drugs!”
Mr. Ju Yajun, 33, was a farmer in Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province. He was known in the community for being very kind. He went to Beijing on October 11, 2000, to appeal for Falun Gong and was detained at the Acheng Second Detention Center for over two months.
After returning home for one month and two days, Mr. Ju was held in the same detention center again, where he was tortured with the “riding an airplane” method. His arms were stretched straight behind his back, while his upper body was bent at a 90-degree angle, parallel to the ground. Any slight movement, and the guards would beat him.
He was sent to Wanjia Labor Camp on July 5, 2001, to serve a one-year term. While there, he was tied to a metal chair for three days and nights. Eight days later, he was transferred to Changlinzi Labor Camp in Harbin City.
Because Mr. Ju went on a hunger strike, he was carried to Changlinzi Clinic on the afternoon of October 21, 2001, to be force-fed and injected with drugs. When Mr. Ju returned to his cell at around 9:00 p.m., he had difficulty breathing.
Pointing at his arm, he kept repeating, “I was injected with drugs! I was injected with drugs!”
On the evening of the next day, Mr. Ju suddenly lost consciousness and his neck became stiff. Two days later, four officers from Changlinzi Labor Camp carried Mr. Ju to Yuquan Township office and forced his family to sign a waiver relieving the labor camp of any liability should he die.
Although Mr. Ju was in critical condition, the officers left immediately once they obtained the necessary signatures. Mr. Ju's family sent him to the Second Affiliate Hospital of Harbin Medical University the same night, but their efforts were too late. Mr. Ju died on October 26, 2001.
Case 7: 610 Office Claims a Practitioner Died of “Suicide”
Mr. Zhang Fangliang was the former deputy head of Rongchang County. After he began to practice Falun Gong in 1998, the cirrhosis and hepatitis B that had bothered him for 23 years were cured. Because he followed the principles of Falun Gong, he never accepted bribes and was known to all he worked with as an upright official.
Mr. Zhang Fangliang, former deputy head of Rongchang County
Mr. Zhang was arrested for distributing Falun Gong materials at a conference in Tongliang County in October 2001 and held at Tongliang Detention Center. His family came on July 3, 2002, to visit him. By then, his four limbs were swollen and he could not stand. Although he had to be carried out by four inmates, he could think clearly and speak coherently.
His family requested bail on account of his poor health, but Liu Anxue, deputy secretary of Tongliang Political and Legal Affairs Committee (PLAC) denied the request. Officials took Mr. Zhang to Tongliang Hospital on July 8. Despite his weak condition, guards handcuffed him and injected him with an unknown drug.
When his family members heard about this, they rushed to the hospital to see him. By then, Mr. Zhang was already semi-conscious and could no longer recognize any of them, even his wife. When the family asked officials what happened, Liu did not give a direct answer. A 610 Office agent stopped Mr. Zhang's intravenous injection and urged his family to take him back home.
Upon returning home, Mr. Zhang had severe tinnitus and difficulty breathing. His family rushed him to Rongchang Hospital, where his heart stopped beating at 6:00 a.m. the next day.
After his death, the 610 Office spread rumors that Mr. Zhang had committed suicide at home.
Case 8: Faking that a Practitioner Died of a Heart Attack
Mr. Li Hongbin, 43, was a Falun Gong practitioner in Acheng City, Heilongjiang Province. After going to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong on November 3, 2000, Mr. Li was arrested and held at the Acheng Detention Center for 15 days.
Officers from Minzhu Police Station arrested him at his home again on December 19, 2000, and took him to a brainwashing center. He subsequently served a one-year detention term at a labor camp.
In 2002, he was sent to Changlinzi Labor Camp in Harbin City again. Because of perseverance in his belief, Mr. Li was brutally tortured and died in two weeks.
According to family members, Mr. Li had died on July 14, 2002. His eyes were wide open upon his death. Practitioners detained with him recounted that Mr. Li was placed in solitary confinement after he went on a hunger strike. After the camp staff force-fed him, he had persistent diarrhea. Unknown drugs were mixed into his food during the force-feeding sessions.
He was handcuffed in the solitary confinement cell after this torture. When someone finally went to check on him, he had already died.
To cover up the death due to maltreatment, the labor camp officials sent Mr. Li's body to a hospital and ordered the medical staff there to set up an intravenous injection, to appear as if they were attempting to rescue him. Officials then announced Mr. Li had died of a heart attack.
Case 9: Retired Teacher Died After Injection of Poisonous Drugs Through Anus
Ms. Zhang Shuzhen, a retired middle school teacher
Mr. Zhang Shuzhen, 51, was a retired teacher from Yuanda Middle School in Beijing. She started to practice Falun Gong in 1992. In 2001, she was arrested for distributing Falun Gong materials and sent to Qinghe Labor Camp.
Inside the labor camp, Ms. Zhang was not allowed to sleep for several days straight. Guards shocked her with electric batons and threw her head against a wall repeatedly. They tortured her in attempts to get information on other practitioners, but Ms. Zhang did not divulge anything.
The guards also injected an unknown substance through her anus, causing her to have severe stomachaches. Ms. Zhang's stomach was engorged to a size bigger than that of a pregnant woman.
Ms. Zhang was later moved to Tuanhe Labor Camp. On her way there, she had acute stomach pains. To avoid responsibility, the officials asked Ms. Zhang's family members to pick her up. Ms. Zhang was sent to Haidian Hospital at 7:00 p.m. on October 9, 2002, and died two hours later at 9:00 p.m. the same night.
Case 10: “I Cannot Talk About This. I Don't Want to be Held Responsible.”
Ms. Hu Hongyue, 45, was an employee at Xindu Oil Pump Nozzle Factory in Sichuan Province. After the 16th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in September 2002, police departments across Chengdu City were tasked with meeting quotas for arresting practitioners.
Ms. Hu went missing on September 28, 2002. In November 2002, the police notified her workplace of her death.
Ms. Hu Hongyue, former employee of Xindu Oil Pump Nozzle Factory in Sichuan Province
The police only showed a picture of Ms. Hu to both of her family members and her workplace and claimed that she had starved to death. Neither her family nor her employer were allowed to see her body, which was forcibly cremated on November 19, 2002.
An officer from the General Commander's Office of Chengdu Police Department commented about Ms. Hu's death on November 23, 2002.
“I cannot talk about this. I don't want to be held responsible,” he said.
Another practitioner, who was sent to Qingyang Hospital on October 15, 2002, wrote of her encounter with Ms. Hu in an article submitted to the Minghui website:
“Six days after I arrived there, two more practitioners were sent there on October 21. They were Ms. Hu Hongyue and Ms. Zhang Yaling from Xindu Oil Pump Nozzle Factory. Although the officers did not allow us to talk to each other, we managed to speak a few words among ourselves.”
“Both of them were arrested on a bus and had been on hunger strikes for over 30 days, protesting the illegal detention. The hunger strike continued after they arrived there. Doctors hooked them up to intravenous injections every day, which caused them to urinate excessively. But the guards did not unlock their foot chains, making them have no choice but to urinate in bed. A nurse, influenced by hateful propaganda from the CCP, reprimanded them severely. The guards also humiliated them and beat them. As time continued, the nurse no longer replaced their bedsheets once a week as scheduled. They had to sleep in beds that were filthy and wet. Despite this inhuman mistreatment, both were still determined to pursue their faith and the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.
“By early November, they could not speak normally and often repeatedly asked, 'What's going on? Why are we here?' Their memories were deteriorating. It was evident that they had been subjected to psychiatric abuse.
“Even under that condition, the Xindu police did not bring them out. Instead, they each received notice of an 18-month labor camp detention term. While holding the notice in their hands, however, they could not read it, nor did they know what it was about.
“After over 20 days in the hospital, as a result of the drugging, Ms. Hu died on the morning of November 12, after struggling for the entire night. When her body was carried away, she left a blood spot with a diameter of over 20 centimeters.”
Case 11: “Another One Is Gone,” Whispered a Police Officer
Ms. Zhang Dezhen, 38, was a biology teacher at Mengyin County Sixth Middle School in Shandong Province. She was diagnosed with hepatitis B during a physical examination in March 1997. There was no progress, even though she went almost everywhere seeking treatment. She became very grateful when her illness was finally cured after she began practicing Falun Gong.
Ms. Zhang Dezhen, a biology teacher
After the persecution started in 1999, Ms. Zhang went to Beijing three times to appeal for Falun Gong. She was arrested two of these times, followed by detentions.
Officers from the Domestic Security Bureau of Mengyin police arrested Ms. Zhang again on September 19, 2002, and held her at Mengyin Detention Center. Bao Xitong and Tian Liegang, two of the police officers, kicked her and beat her with rubber police batons. When Ms. Zhang went on a hunger strike to protest, she was force-fed at Mengyin Hospital many times.
Lei Yancheng, director of the local 610 Office, discussed Ms. Zhang's treatment with Sun Kehai (director of Mengyin Detention Center) and Guo Xingbao (president of Mengyin Hospital). Following their instructions, Wang Chunxiao, a doctor from the detention center, led a team that injected unknown substances into Ms. Zhang, leaving her near death.
On January 31, 2003 – Chinese New Year's Eve – Ms. Zhang died after her last lethal injection.
“Another one is gone,” whispered a police officer.
Case 12: “We Won't Release Her Even If She Dies Here,” Replied 610 Office
Ms. Meng Xiao, 37, grew up in the countryside of Nanchong City, Sichuan Province. After graduating from college, she worked at the Chengdu Steel Plant (later Panzhihua Iron and Steel). When being hospitalized due to illness in March 1999, she began to practice Falun Gong, and the unsolvable illness was cured.
Ms. Meng Xiao (picture taken during her internship in Beijing)
She was arrested and sentenced to a two-year prison term after displaying a banner related to Falun Gong at Tiananmen Square on November 17, 1999. During her detention in Beijing, she was beaten, shocked with electric batons, and tied up, among other types of torture.
Ms. Meng was sent to Sichuan Women's Prison in Jianyang City on April 12, 2000. She was repeatedly put into solitary confinement, beaten, dragged up and downstairs, and shocked with electric batons. She was also handcuffed behind her back many times, including several days being left under a window during freezing winter, when she was allowed only one thin layer of clothing.
Torture illustration: handcuffed behind the back
Because Ms. Meng distributed Falun Gong materials after her release, officers from the Tuanjie Police Station detained her for 15 days. After her article exposing the persecution was published on the Minghui website on January 21, 2002, the police ministry – through the Sichuan Province administration – ordered her workplace to monitor Ms. Meng closely. As a result, she was held at the Chengdu Steel Plant for a period of time, without being allowed to go home at night.
Ms. Meng was sent to Tangchang Brainwashing Center on April 24, 2002. While there, she was beaten and kicked to the point that she could no longer stand due to injuries to her spine and tailbone. After falling into critical condition, Ms. Meng was sent back to her workplace, where she was injected forcibly with nerve-damaging drugs.
Although nearly paralyzed, she was able to read Falun Gong books and do the exercises and was to stand up without medication. She was later forced to escape her own home to avoid further persecution.
Chengdu police and Jintang County police arrested Ms. Meng on November 19, 2003. Officials at Jintang Detention Center often took her to the 201 Military Hospital for routine injections of poisonous, nerve-damaging drugs, including two doses of diazepam and one dose of chlorpromazine.
After Ms. Meng explained what Falun Gong was to the doctors, they stopped administering the drugs to her. She was then taken to Jintang First Hospital to continue the forced injections.
Torture illustration: Forced-injection of unknown drugs
Ms. Meng's family requested her release, but an officer from the Chengdu 610 Office refused.
“We won’t release her even if she dies here,” he was reported to say.
Ms. Meng died at the hospital between January 8 and 12, 2004. Her wounded body was cremated immediately by officials without the family being notified.
Case 13: “I Don’t Want to Die! I Want to Go Home!” Cried Pharmacist Before Death
Ms. Zhang Hong, a pharmacist working in a biochemical lab. She died at the age of 31.
Ms. Zhang Hong, 31, was a pharmacist working at Harbin Fourth Hospital in Heilongjiang Province. On May 8, 2004, officers from Dongfeng Police Station sent her to Harbin Second Detention Center. On July 22, 2004, she was sent to the Training Unit of Wanjia Labor Camp to serve a three-year term.
Because she refused to write statements that defamed Falun Gong, Ms. Zhang was handcuffed to the upper level of a bunk bed while she stood on the floor.
On July 23, 2004, guards held her on a wooden bed, handcuffed both arms over her head, and tied both feet with ropes to the end of the bed. This was followed by an injection of unknown drugs which caused incontinence. Guards removed all her clothing except for an undershirt, and left her to the wind in front of a window.
After Ms. Zhang went on hunger strike on July 24 to protest, guards ordered inmates to force-feed her corn soup mixed with a large amount of salt. She was not given water or allowed to use the bathroom. Her feet were swollen and turned purplish. During the force-feeding on July 29, one towel used in her procedure became completely soaked with her blood.
Before an intravenous injection given to Ms. Zhang on July 30, 2004, a supervisor surnamed Yu diluted an unknown drug with cold tap water. At around 8:00 a.m., Ms. Zhang called out, “I don’t want to die! I want to go home! My home address is such and such.”
That afternoon, she was handcuffed behind her back to a metal chair, and her head was covered with patches of white tape.
Torture illustration: Forced-injection of unknown drugs
At 1:00 p.m. on July 31, 2004, two guards with masks ordered four inmates to carry Ms. Zhang to 211 Military Hospital. Witnesses said Ms. Zhang was already dead at that time. Her family received a notice at 3:20 p.m. that Ms. Zhang had died at 2:00 p.m.
Case 14: Face Deformed with Blood from Eyes, Ears, Nose and Mouth
Mr. Chang Yongfu was a Falun Gong practitioner in Mulan County, Heilongjiang Province. Officers from Mulan First Police Station arrested him at his home on August 21, 2004, and took him to Changlinzi Labor Camp. There, guards and inmates beat him many times, leaving him semi-conscious.
To avoid responsibility for Mr. Chang's mistreatment, the labor camp returned him to Mulan County. The Mulan 610 Office secretly sent him first to Dongxing Mental Hospital in Mulan County and then to Puning Mental Hospital in Harbin for further persecution.
Hospital officials notified his elder sister in October 2006 to come pick him up. By then Mr. Chang had already become mentally incoherent. His nose was swollen, he could not sleep either day or night, and he often screamed. His vision had deteriorated to the point where he was fully blind. During bursts of clarity, he said that the mental hospitals had given him unknown drugs that made his entire body ache. His nose, head, and eyes were especially sensitive.
Mr. Chang died at 5:00 a.m. on January 18, 2007. He was 44 years old. There was blood in his eyes, ears, nose, and mouth at the time of his death.
Case 15: “We Know How to Take Care of This.”
Ms. Cao Yuanru was a Falun Gong practitioner in Laiyuan County, Hebei Province. One day in 2005, Ms. Cao had the symptoms of a fever. Under the influence of the CCP propaganda, her family sent her to Baoding Mental Hospital.
“Falun Gong?” said the doctor to the family, upon her admission. “Feel free to leave. We know how to take care of this.”
The following day, Ms. Cao died after lethal injection at the hospital. Her entire body was purplish. There was blood in her nose and mouth – blood which was nearly black. Her family members regretted their decision, but it was too late. Ms. Cao was 35, and left behind a four-month-old daughter.
Case 16: “If She Doesn't Die, She Will Be Like a Bomb.”
Ms. Liu Xiaolian lived in Babaodao Village of Chibi City, Hubei Province. She had many illnesses, and lost vision in her right eye in 1958. After she began to practice Falun Gong in 1995, all of her illnesses disappeared within two weeks; she even regained sight in her right eye. She was always happy to share with others the joy and beauty she experienced due to her practice.
First Detention: Forced Drugging
In December 2000, Ms. Liu went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. Though she reached Tiananmen Square, she was arrested and beaten. Three days later, she was sent to Haicheng City, Liaoning Province, where she was exposed to extremely cold weather and not given enough food.
On January 17, 2001, officers from the Chibi Police Department took her to the Chibi City Second Detention Center, where she was held. The police hired a temporary officer, Ye Jun, to torture Ms. Liu. Ye beat her about the head, eyes, chest, and abdomen every morning. Around Chinese New Year, she was transferred to the Chibi City First Detention Center.
On June 28, 2002, Deng Dingsheng and Qian Yulan, two deputy directors of the detention center, took her to Chibi First Hospital. Guard Song Yuzhen and two inmates were also involved. Without examining Ms. Liu, doctors prepared drugs for injection. The detention officials handcuffed Ms. Liu's hands and feet to four corners of a bed. She was then blindfolded and forcibly injected with the drugs.
That same night, Ms. Liu bled from her mouth, nose, ears, and eyes. Her ears were in extreme pain. She also vomited and had diarrhea, urinated blood, and had blood clots in her bowels. Five days later, her stool was dark, bloody, and smelled foul.
Whenever she used the bathroom, she experienced pain levels that were similar to giving birth. She was unable to eat, and could drink only small amounts of water. Realizing that she was on the verge of death, the detention center officials released her after forcing her family to pay 3,000 yuan.
Ms. Liu was in critical condition when she arrived home, and her family thought that she would not live much longer. They began to prepare for her funeral. But miraculously, she recovered. Although she was still weak, on her better days she went out to tell people about the persecution she had suffered.
Second Detention: Torture of “Five Horses Separating the Body”
However, on the second day she went out, the local police came to her home and took her from her bed. She was transferred to the Chibi City First Detention Center on October 17, 2002.
On December 6, 2002, deputy director Deng Dingsheng, with a dozen guards and four inmates, tortured Ms. Liu. The four inmates grabbed each of her limbs and pulled hard on them. Deng grabbed her head and pulled hard on it as well. This torture, which was dubbed “five horses separating the body,” caused Ms. Liu's anus to be torn open, and many of her bones were dislocated.
Other guards later joined in torturing Ms. Liu. One after another, they beat her with heavy shackles. Many of her bones broke in the process, and Ms. Liu lost consciousness. After she regained consciousness, they pushed her neck harshly against her shoulder, and she passed out again. After she regained consciousness, she was locked in shackles for over a week, and was not given any water for two weeks.
On April 29, 2003, to force Ms. Liu to renounce Falun Gong, Deng Dingsheng and several guards beat her again. By this time, her head was bleeding and the bones in her arms, legs, hands, chest and lumbar region were broken.
The guards assumed she would die, so they threw her by a pond in the garden. When they saw that Ms. Liu did not die, they kicked and stomped on her. The joints in her arms and legs were broken to the point where some of her bones were exposed. Somehow, she remained alive. Because Ms. Liu was no longer able to take care of herself, the officials at the detention center notified her family on May 29, 2004, to come and take her home.
Third Detention: “The Lotus Flower Will Wither This Time”
In December 2003, Minghui.org published the article “Surviving Extreme Torture - A Lotus Flower that Never Withers” describing the cruelty Ms. Liu experienced at the detention center.
As retaliation, Chibi City 610 office and State Security Bureau worked with local officials and arrested her at home on December 29, 2003. On January 10, 2004, the city 610 Office and National Security personnel transferred Ms. Liu from the roundhouse to the city detention center. Before entering the cell, the center director Deng Dingsheng hit and beat her head while saying, “We'll draw and quarter you again!”
Zhou Xinhua, deputy Party secretary of Chibi Town, spoke with Ms. Liu's husband. “The Minghui article described Ms. Liu as a lotus flower that never withers. But I know that the lotus flower will wither this time. If she dies, how much money you would want from us?” he said.
Ms. Liu's torture intensified. On February 19, 2004, while Ms. Liu was meditating, Detention Center Deputy Director Qian Yulan used a heavy boot to beat Ms. Liu's head, causing her eyes and ears to bleed, and blood to flow out of her nose profusely, soaking her whole body and blanket in the cell. Since Ms. Liu could not take care of herself, officials carried her home on May 29, 2004, to avoid responsibility for her health.
“If she doesn't die, she will be like a bomb,” commented an official.
Fourth Detention: Unable to Speak After Forced Drugging
The police arrested Ms. Liu again on April 26, 2006. This time, she was sent directly to the Pufang Mental Hospital in Chibi City. Because she was so severely persecuted, she became mute. The following was transcribed from her handwritten note:
“A physician known as Director Zhang made an agreement with the Chibi Town government and the police for me to be subjected to medical abuse for the price of 6,000 yuan. Under the direction of Director Zhang and his accomplices, I was subjected to high-voltage electric shocks and shocked with electric needles for four hours. He also ordered young male psychiatric patients to insult, curse, beat and sexually harass me.
“I was also force-fed with drugs that are harmful to my body. He also gave me 11 liters of poisonous intravenous infusions over a 24-hour period. Afterward, the skin all over my body turned dark, and I lost consciousness for 48 hours. When I came to, I had lost the ability to speak. The doctor only stopped the medical abuse when he saw that I had become mute.”
Fifth Detention: Continued Drugging and Death
On September 1, 2006, Ms. Liu was once again sent to the Chibi Pufang Mental Hospital and persecuted. She was force-fed, injected with unknown drugs, shocked with electric needles, and suffocated under quilts for several hours. She was on the verge of death. The people responsible for the persecution included Dr. Han Hai, Dr. Shen Zubo, and Director Zhang Hongjing.
Ms. Liu's entire body was swollen, and she was near death.
During the next two years of detention, Ms. Liu continued to be tormented physically and mentally. By September 2008, her whole body was swollen, she had difficulty eating, and was unable to urinate. She was sent home after the doctor said she had only about twenty days to live.
After more than five years and four months of heinous persecution, Ms. Liu passed away on October 26, 2008. That same night, six plainclothes police officers staked out her home to try and catch any Falun Gong practitioners that might visit her.
Case 17: “Being Responsible to Her”
Ms. Gong Hui, 57, was a doctor at Dagang Oilfield in Tianjin. She had to retire early due to numerous illnesses. Three months after she took up Falun Gong in 1997, however, all of her illnesses disappeared. She was brimming with energy and looked at least a decade younger.

Ms. Gong was arrested on August 13, 2008 in the name “maintaining national security” preceding the Beijing Olympics, by local police and Domestic Security officers. She was detained in the Nankai District Detention Center for 35 days, and then taken to the Banqiao Forced Labor Camp in Dagang District on September 17, 2008.
It was suspected that the labor camp put drugs in her food and water, which left Ms. Gong mentally unbalanced. She had a permanently blank stare and regular tremors. She was also unable to sleep normally and would shake uncontrollably when she walked.
While she was in this condition, the forced labor camp made her write the three statements to denounce Falun Gong. After that, they made her work in the labor camp workshop and took her to different hospitals for testing.
In addition to neurotoxic drugs, officials also forced Ms. Gong to take nerve-suppressing medication, leaving her in agony and confusion every day.
“We are being responsible to her,” declared one officer.
A shiny, fibrous-looking substance was seen in the drinking water that the labor camp gave to some Falun Gong practitioners, including Ms. Gong. After drinking this water, the victim’s tongue would feel numb and bleed. The tongue would also feel like it was wrapped with a metal wire. After a while, the victim would feel numbness all over, her whole body would shake, and she would experience confusion and shortness of breath, ultimately resulting in difficulty controlling herself and keeping calm.
Ms. Gong was sent home ten months after she became mentally unbalanced. She passed away 22 days later on December 4, 2009.
Case 18: “Treat Her With the Drugs for Falun Gong,” Said a Doctor
Ms. Xu Decun, 52, was a Falun Gong practitioner in Zaozhuang City, Shandong Province. After being arrested and sent to Jiefang North Road Police Station on April 27, 2002, she was able to escape the next day.
She was forced to stay away from her family for the following eight years, to avoid arrest. After finally returning home to take care of her son and elderly mother-in-law on April 30, 2010, she was arrested again on May 2 and sentenced to a two-year prison term.
After being released in 2012, she felt exhausted with fatigue, as if under the influence of some substance.
When her health continued to deteriorate, her family sent her to Zaozhuang Municipal Hospital. Seeing her in such poor health, the doctors first declined to accept her.
Upon hearing that Ms. Xu was a Falun Gong practitioner, however, one doctor said, “We will treat her with the drugs for Falun Gong.”

Ms. Xu was taken to the Intensive Care Unit at 5:00 a.m. on September 6, 2013. On the way, she called out, “Falun Dafa is great! Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is great!”
One minute after entering the ICU, a doctor announced that Ms. Xu had passed of “brain death.”
Case 19: Injection Sites Clearly Visible
Mr. Luo Jiangping, 51, was a resident of Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province. After beginning to practice Falun Gong in 1996, his physical health and character improved significantly. He followed the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, and was always willing to lend a helping hand to his neighbors.
In an area where water was scarce, local residents often fought with each other for irrigation water. Mr. Luo and other Falun Gong practitioners were always considerate and waited for everyone else to finish before watering their own land. This earned them great respect from the local residents.
Mr. Luo Jiangping and his family
In early 2002, Mr. Luo was taken to Deyang Prison for a five-year term.
On January 6, 2012, Mr. Luo went to Nanhua County in Yunnan Province to distribute Falun Gong materials and was arrested by officers from Longchuan Police Station. In April 2012, the Nanhua Court sentenced him to a four year and six-month prison term. He was then taken to Yunnan First Prison on June 1, 2012, to serve his term.
Because of his belief, guards and inmates handcuffed Mr. Luo, beat him, and injected him with unknown drugs. In addition, he had to work over ten hours every day. If he did not finish his assignments, he was deprived of sleep or placed in solitary confinement.
During repeated force-feeding sessions, the muscles in his mouth were injured and all his lower teeth were knocked out. Very few of his upper teeth remained, and were all loose.
Mr. Luo, now in life-threatening condition, was released on bail on December 23, 2013, due to his poor health. Upon returning to his home in Sichuan, Mr. Luo told his mother, other family members, and friends about the poisonous injections he received while in prison.
The holes left by the needles were clearly seen on both of his arms. Each injection site had a bruise roughly two centimeters in diameter surrounding it. Mr. Luo died five days later, on December 28, 2013.
Case 20: Organs Removed and Family Barred from Seeing the Body
Mr. Gao Yixi, 45, was a resident in Mudanjiang City, Heilongjiang Province. His entire family started to practice Falun Gong one after another to treat their various illnesses. The health benefits were unquestionable, as his sister's gastric cancer was cured, his mother's tongue cancer and sepsis disappeared, and Mr. Gao's glaucoma was gone. Following the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance to be better citizens, the entire family lived in harmony.
Mr. Gao and his family suffered tremendously after the suppression began in July 1999. His sister, Ms. Gao Xiurong, was detained numerous times in labor camps and prisons. Intimidated by the constant stress and terror, his father died in extreme anxiety. To avoid further persecution, Mr. Gao himself was forced to stay away from his home for several years.
Mr. Gao and his wife were arrested at their home at 10:00 p.m. on April 19, 2016. Mr. Gao was sent to Mudanjiang Second Detention Center at 5:00 a.m. the next day. When he protested his treatment with a hunger strike, the guards force-fed him and continued torturing him.
Mr. Gao was sent to Mudanjiang Police Hospital on April 28, 2016. Doctors there forced an intravenous injection on him. In the beginning, Mr. Gao was able to remove the needle. Later on, the guards tied him to the bed, across his chest and legs. His hands were also handcuffed separately.
The injection continued despite his protests.
Upon hearing about this, his mother and daughter went to the hospital on the morning of April 29 to visit him. But officials prevented them from seeing Mr. Gao.
At 5:40 a.m. the next day, officials announced that Mr. Gao had died suddenly due to organ failure. His eyes were wide open and teary.
His head had bruises and his fists were clenched tightly, with his nails having turned purple. There were three big needle holes on his right calf. Some organs had been removed from his body. The officials refused to allow Mr. Gao's family members to view his body.
