(Minghui.org) A 68-year-old woman in Yueyang City, Hunan Province, was arrested and had her home ransacked on March 16, 2020, by police officers from the Yueyang Lou District National Security Brigade. After two days of interrogation, Ms. Huang Juxiu was taken to Yueyang No. 2 Detention Center (also known as Yunxi Detention Center).
Although Ms. Huang was released on bail at the end of April, she was arrested again in the middle of July and committed to Yueyang Psychiatric Rehabilitation Hospital against her will. She became the third Falun Gong practitioner in Hunan Province confirmed to have been taken to psychiatric hospitals following their arrests this year, even though they are all mentally healthy.
Prior to her latest persecution, Ms. Huang had been arrested ten times for her faith in Falun Gong, a body and mind disciple that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since 1999. Her arrests are summarized below in chronological order.
Arrested During an Appeal in September 1999
When the CCP began the persecution on July 20, 1999, Ms. Huang and her fellow practitioners went to speak out for Falun Gong in Beijing. They were arrested at Tiananmen Square and taken to the Yueyang Office in Beijing. She escaped shortly after but was arrested again in Beijing two months later. She was taken back to Yueyang, detained for 30 days and fined 2,000 yuan.
Arrested Twice in 2000
In February 2000, Ms. Huang went to the Central Appeals Office in Beijing, demanding that the authorities end their defamation of Falun Gong and its founder. She also requested to lift the ban on the publication of Falun Gong books and to allow practitioners to study the Falun Gong teachings and do the exercises in public. As a result of her appeal, she was held in Yueyang Women’s Labor Camp for three months.
In November, Ms. Huang went to Beijing to speak out for Falun Gong again. She was stopped at Jinshui Bridge near Tiananmen Square, arrested and beaten inside the police car. She was detained in Tiananmen Square Police Station for seven days. Because she refused to reveal her name and address, she was then transferred to Chongwen Detention Center, where she went on a hunger strike for seven days.
Arrested in January 2001
On January 16, 2001, Ms. Huang was arrested at home and taken to Yueyang Detention Center. She was incarcerated for more than three months.
Ms. Huang went on a hunger strike three times. One time, she passed out during force-feeding with a bamboo tube. During the third hunger strike, which lasted for eight days, her life was in danger and the detention center released her.
Arrested at Work in 2003
In November 2003, Ms. Huang was arrested at work by officers from the local 610 Office, an extralegal agency created to persecute Falun Gong. She was taken to the brainwashing center inside Yunxi Branch Police Station, where many practitioners were also detained.
Like other practitioners, Ms. Huang was forced to watch videos and read books that slandered Falun Gong and its founder. When she refused to cooperate, she was kicked and dragged on the snowy ground. She was persecuted there for more than two months.
Arrested on Street in 2004
Suspecting Ms. Huang of making Falun Gong informational materials, the police closely monitored and followed her everywhere for more than a month. Although they didn’t find anything against her, they still arrested her on the street in May 2004.
She was interrogated nonstop for two days and slapped because she refused to cooperate with them. She was detained for 87 days before escaping from the Yueyang Detention Center.
Arrest in 2005
On October 10, 2005, Ms. Huang was arrested from her home again. She was taken to Hubin Brainwashing Center in Yueyang City on the same day. After spending a few days there, Ms. Huang was transferred to Yunxi Detention Center. She was interrogated and beaten into making a confession.
Tortured in Hunan Women's Prison in 2006
In March 2006, Ms. Huang was sentenced to four years in prison. She refused to accept the verdict and filed an appeal with the Yueyang Intermediate People's Court. The court upheld the original judgment, and Ms. Huang was taken to Hunan Women's Prison in June.
In August, Ms. Huang was taken to a brainwashing center inside the prison. The center's windows and doors were tightly shut at all times. Only prison guards and criminal inmates who participated in the persecution could freely enter or leave that place. Various torture measures were employed to persecute the practitioners there.
On the first day, three inmates pretended to be concerned about Ms. Huang. When she didn't cooperate, they forced her to stand until after midnight. The standing torture continued for several days. Ms. Huang's feet swelled up so much that her shoes became too small and could no longer fit. Instead of giving her a bigger pair of shoes, the inmates forcibly squeezed her swollen feet into the shoes and forced her to stand upright.
One day, Ms. Huang erased slanderous slogans against Falun Gong from a wall. The inmates grabbed her hair and beat her all over. Ms. Huang could not lift her head as a result of the severe beating.
On October 8, Ms. Huang was taken to the brainwashing center again. As soon as she arrived, inmates started to vituperate and torture her when she refused to be brainwashed. They deprived her of sleep, stomped on her and forced her to stand all day long, even when she was eating.
Because of the torture, Ms. Huang was dizzy, nauseated, and vomiting. She was unable to open her eyes. Inmate Yan Meiying rubbed Ms. Huang's eyes with an irritating medicine while hitting her with a book. Ms. Huang was subjected to this kind of torture for two months.
Arrests in 2011
Ms. Huang and another practitioner, Ms. Li Junzhi, were telling people about the persecution of Falun Gong on the evening of July 31, 2011, when they were reported to the police and arrested by officers from Dongdan Police Station. They were taken to Hubin Detention Center.
Ms. Huang was taken to Zhuzhou Baimalong Women's Labor Camp. However, she was released because the camp refused to admit her due to her poor health condition.
On August 23, Ms. Huang was taken back to the labor camp from home by two police officers. They threatened to incarcerate her for two years. They pressured the labor camp to accept her despite her poor health condition.
On the third day in the labor camp, Ms. Huang started to have symptoms of a heart attack. When she refused oxygen and IV drips, the labor camp informed Ms. Huang's family to bring her home.
Her workplace stopped her retirement pension payments in the same month. She approached the 610 Office for help but without success.
Persecution at Laodaohe Brainwashing Center in 2012
On September 2, 2012, Ms. Huang was arrested on her way home from grocery shopping by police officers from Yueyang 610 Office and other units. She was taken to Laodaohe Brainwashing Center in Changsha City. This facility was established specifically to brainwash Falun Gong practitioners, and some were persecuted to death there.
Ms. Huang was locked in an isolation room and watched by several collaborators. Those collaborators played slanderous videos around the clock and squeezed her at the acupoints.
Ms. Huang was not allowed to sleep. She was slapped for refusing to cooperate with them and, as a result, one of her teeth came out. She was also made to stand upright for long periods of time. The torture lasted for more than a month. She was released in the first half of October when her life was in danger.
After Ms. Huang returned home, the deputy director of the Yueyang 610 Office forced her son to monitor her activities.
Arrested in 2015
Ms. Huang was arrested again on the afternoon of August 20, 2015, when she was distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. She was interrogated until midnight and then taken to Guangji Hospital for a physical exam. Because of problems in her internal organs and high blood pressure, the detention center did not admit her. Ms. Huang was thus released.
