(Minghui.org) A Jinan City, Shandong Province resident had a stroke while imprisoned for his faith in Falun Gong. After the local intermediate court rejected his appeal against the four-year sentence, he decided to file a motion to reconsider his case.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is an ancient spiritual and meditation discipline that has been persecuted by the Chines Communist Party since 1999.
Mr. Jiao Kai, 50, was reported for distributing information about Falun Gong on January 7, 2019. He was put on the wanted list and was arrested at the train station of Linyi City, about 150 miles from Jinan, on January 22. He was brought back to Jinan on January 24 and sent to Jinan City Detention Center.
Mr. Jiao was sentenced to four years and fined 4,000 yuan by Tianqiao District Court on December 18, 2019. He appealed the verdict, but was turned down by Jinan City Intermediate Court on March 27, 2020.
Before receiving the decision from the intermediate court, Mr. Jiao was released on medical parole on January 22, 2020, after he suffered a stroke while in custody. He is currently preparing to file a motion to reconsider his case to the intermediate court.
Mr. Jiao took up Falun Gong in April 2014 and credits the practice for helping him quit smoking and drinking. He also became more polite and considerate of others by following Falun Gong’s principles of “Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance.”
Mr. Jiao was arrested on April 2, 2016 after being being reported for passing out informational materials about Falun Gong. His Falun Gong books, related materials, computers and printers were confiscated. He was released on bail on April 15, 2016.
Mr. Jiao was arrested again on October 4, 2018 after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. His home was ransacked and he was given 15 days of administrative detention.
