(Minghui.org) Following criticism of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) by the United States Administration, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo reiterated that the communist regime poses a continued danger to Western society.
Pompeo made those remarks on May 31, 2020, during the Sunday Morning Futures program on Fox News. This interview was also broadcast by multiple news media such as Politico, The Hill, and others.
Two days earlier, President Donald Trump had spoken in the White House Rose Garden outlining new measures to counteract China’s threat.
Pompeo: The CCP Undermines Western Values
The CCP has “come to view itself as intent upon the destruction of Western ideas, Western democracies, and Western values. It puts Americans at risk,” Pompeo said during the interview.
He was echoing President Trump's remarks about the CCP's covering up details surrounding the coronavirus outbreak, stealing intellectual property, and actions in the South China Sea.
Michael Pompeo, United States Secretary of State
Secretary Pompeo talked about how the U.S. will counteract the threats from the CCP. For example, the U.S. has been giving Hong Kong special trade status for many years. “The Chinese Communist Party has now broken its promise and the United States will respond,” he added. “It no longer makes sense if the Chinese are going to treat Hong Kong the same way that they treat mainland China, there's no basis for the United States to treat it differently as well.”
He said Western allies would see the risk of the CCP, too: “This is what authoritarian regimes do. They steal information. They deny freedom of expression. They oppress their peoples and they present risk to people all across the world. Democracies behave completely differently. And I think the people of Europe will come to see that, along with the United States, we can work together to build our economies, to protect our people, and to keep the entire world in a place where the Chinese Communist Party does not dominate the next century.”
He said quite a few bipartisan bills have been introduced to counter the CCP. He believes that Members of Congress will put differences aside to hold China accountable.
President Trump: New Measures Against the CCP
During his speech on May 29, President Trump said the CCP has been harming other countries such as the U.S. for a long time. “Hundreds of billions of dollars a year were lost dealing with China... China raided our factories, offshored our jobs, gutted our industries, stole our intellectual property, and violated their commitments under the World Trade Organization,” he said. “To make matters worse, they are considered a developing nation getting all sorts of benefits that others, including the United States, are not entitled to.”
He said the U.S. wants an open and constructive relationship with China, but the CCP has continually violated its promises to the U.S. and so many other nations.
One example is the coronavirus pandemic. “China’s cover-up of the Wuhan virus allowed the disease to spread all over the world, instigating a global pandemic... Chinese officials ignored their reporting obligations to the World Health Organization and pressured the World Health Organization to mislead the world when the virus was first discovered by Chinese authorities,” said President Trump.
He said the world needs answers from China on the virus. Because of mishandling by the CCP, the world is suffering. “The death and destruction caused by this is incalculable. We must have answers, not only for us but for the rest of the world,” he said.
Besides stealing intellectual properties and damaging the Western financial system, China also caused troubling situations unfolding in Hong Kong. “This week, China unilaterally imposed control over Hong Kong security. This was a plain violation of Beijing’s treaty obligations with the United Kingdom in the Declaration of 1984 and explicit provisions of Hong Kong’s Basic Law. It has 27 years to go,” he added.
He said the United States will also take necessary steps to sanction PRC (People's Republic of China) and Hong Kong officials directly or indirectly involved in eroding Hong Kong’s autonomy. “Our actions will be strong. Our actions will be meaningful,” he remarked.
