(Minghui.org) A 67-year-old woman in Maoming City, Guangdong Province, was sentenced to four years in late 2020 for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. Ms. Huang Huifang appealed the verdict, but the higher court upheld it.
Ms. Huang was arrested on February 22, 2020, for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong, which she credits for quickly improving her health after taking it up in December 1998. A dozen officers ransacked her home that evening. She was released on bail the next day.
The police submitted Ms. Huang’s case to the Maonan District Court in October 2020. The court issued a notice to officially arrest her on October 26 and she was taken back into custody the next day.
Ms. Huang appeared in court in late December 2020 and was sentenced to four years with a 20,000-yuan fine. She appealed with the Maoming City Intermediate Court, which ruled to uphold the original verdict on March 12, 2021.
Past Persecution
Since the onset of the persecution, Ms. Huang has been repeatedly targeted for her faith.
She was first arrested in the train station in Guilin City, Yunnan Province, in March 2000 while on her way to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. The police took her last 50 yuan and forced her to kneel for hours during the interrogation. Back in Maoming City, she was given 15 days of administrative detention and fined 2,000 yuan.
Nanguan Police Station officers regularly harassed her after that, most recently on September 6 and October 10, 2017. The police took photos of her and asked if she still practiced Falun Gong.
