Mr. Yao Chengda’s blood pressure shot up after the police threatened to give him a lengthy prison term following his last arrest in December 2020. The 85-year-old man’s health continued to decline and he suffered a stroke on April 26, 2022. He passed away hours later.
Mr. Yao’s death capped decades of suffering for upholding his faith in Falun Gong after the Chinese communist regime ordered the persecution of this ancient spiritual discipline in 1999.
The soft-spoken man in Jixi City, Heilongjiang Province, was first arrested on May 29, 2012, for helping another practitioner fix his computer. His repair tools were confiscated. He was detained for 18 days and fined 3,000 yuan.
Weeks later on June 27, 2012, Yu Xiaofeng, the head of Mishan City 610 Office, went to Mr. Yao’s home and took him to the Mishan Brainwashing Center located in the “Jingpinhu (Fine Lake Fish) Restaurant.” He was held there for 49 days and released on August 9.
The officials with the Mishan City Political and Legal Affairs Committee deceived Mr. Yao into going to the brainwashing center again on September 15, 2012, and ordered him to sign a statement to slander Falun Gong. He refused to comply and was held there for 12 days.
Mr. Yao’s last arrest at the hands of Limin Police Station officers occurred on December 22, 2020. His home was ransacked. While interrogating him at the police station, the police threatened him with a lengthy prison term.
Having already lived under tremendous mental pressure for decades due to the persecution, Mr. Yao suffered elevated blood pressure after being released on bail.
He felt dizzy and very unwell on the evening of April 26, 2022. He had already lost consciousness when his family took him to the hospital. The doctor said he’d had a massive brain hemorrhage. He was pronounced dead around 2 a.m. on April 27.
