(Minghui.org) The family of Ms. Peng Huaying recently learned that she has been secretly sentenced to three years for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Peng, a Bazhong City, Sichuan Province resident, was arrested on July 2, 2021, after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. It came shortly after her daughter gave birth to a baby girl. Other details of her case aren’t clear.
Ms. Peng used to work for the Bazhong Statistics Bureau. Due to years of hard work, she developed cervical deformity, lumbar herniation and spinal cyst in 2004, and she eventually became incapacitated. While seeking treatment in 2008, she was introduced to Falun Gong. Only a month after learning the practice, she recovered and was able to ride a bike to work again.
Grateful for Falun Gong, Ms. Peng used her spared time to spread information about the practice, hoping more people could benefit from it like her. Because of that, she was targeted by the authorities and arrested multiple times. She was fired by her workplace and had her decades of service wiped out, rendering her ineligible for any pension benefits.
Ms. Peng was arrested in May 2012 for giving out informational materials about Falun Gong. The Bazhou District Court sentenced her to three years with four years probation, on charges of “undermining law enforcement with a cult organization,” the standard pretext used to criminalize Falun Gong practitioners. Her sentencing dealt her mother a heavy blow and the elderly woman passed away due to the mental distress. Ms. Peng wasn’t allowed to attend her funeral.
Ms. Peng was arrested again in September 2014 for writing to the central disciplinary inspection team about the persecution she had suffered. The authorities retaliated by suspending her probation and took her to the Sichuan Province Women’s Prison to serve time.
As a result of the torture in prison, Ms. Peng suffered declined health and memory. Her head nodded involuntarily and she spoke incoherently. Although she recovered by resuming practicing Falun Gong, she was arrested again years later and given another prison term.
