(Minghui.org) A Songzi City, Hubei Province resident was recently sentenced to 3.5 years in prison for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Liu Yu’e, in her 50s, was arrested on June 22, 2021. A dozen officers, including agents from the 610 Office and deputy police chief Wu Jun, confiscated her three computers and dozens of Falun Gong books.
Ms. Liu was held in a brainwashing center known to the outside as a “Care Center” for three days. She held a hunger strike to protest the persecution and was transferred to the Gong’an County Detention Center, where she continued the hunger strike for another 15 days.
Ms. Liu stood trial at the Songzi City Court on November 1, 2021. Her lawyer entered a not guilty plea for her. Her family recently learned that she was sentenced to 3.5 years with a 6,000-yuan fine.
Ms. Liu has been denied family visits since her arrest last year. Her daughter went to the detention center many times, but was refused visitation each time. Ms. Liu’s family only saw her during the hearing.
Ms. Liu began to practice Falun Gong before the persecution began in 1999. This is the fourth time that she has been arrested for raising awareness about the persecution.
She was first arrested on April 13, 2006 for talking to people about Falun Gong. She was held at the Songzi City Detention Center and later sentenced to one year. Due to poor health, she was released on medical parole after serving one month.
Ms. Liu was arrested again on January 17, 2010 in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, also for talking to people about Falun Gong. She was detained for two years and one week.
She travelled to Zhijiang City, Hubei Province on August 1, 2013 to distribute Falun Gong materials, only to be arrested the third time and held at the Zhijiang Lockup for ten days.
During her detention, she was forced to sit on a small stool in a solitary confinement cell. The guards ordered her to watch propaganda videos in an attempt to force her to renounce Falun Gong. She refused to comply and shouted “Falun Dafa is good” in protest. The guards ordered two inmates to beat her in retaliation.
