An 83-year-old man died 20 days after he finished serving a three-year term for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline also known as Falun Dafa that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Mr. Bai Xingguo (also known as Bai Xinguo) was injected with a toxic drug six months before his term ended. His health has since kept deteriorating, and he was constantly in a delirious state. When the prison asked his family to pick him up in January 2022, he was already incapacitated and on the verge of death. He passed away 20 days later.
Mr. Bai of Chengde City, Hebei Province, was arrested on January 4, 2018, when he went with several other practitioners to put up banners reading “Falun Dafa is good.” Zhang Pengfei, head of the Domestic Security Office, ransacked his home and submitted his case to the Procuratorate.
The Fengning County Court tried Mr. Bai on April 18, 2018, and sentenced him to a three-year prison term in June 2018.
On December 15, 2018, Mr. Bai, who had been released on bail, was taken back into custody at Tucheng Detention Center and later transferred to the Tangshan Prison, where he was given the deadly shot.
Many Falun Gong practitioners in Chengde City have been targeted for their faith since the onset of the persecution. As of July 2019, at least 24 practitioners had died as a result of the persecution, 109 were sentenced, 158 were given labor camp terms, and 412 were arrested and had their homes ransacked.
Mr. Bai was previously arrested in 2001 by the same officer Zhang, who extorted 5,000 yuan from him and confiscated his Falun Gong books, tape player, TV signal receiver, and some copy paper.
Zhang arrested Mr. Bai again in 2007 and gave him a term at Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp without due process. Only after the labor camp refused to accept him due to his health condition, was Mr. Bai allowed to go home.
