A Changchun City, Jilin Province resident was released on the verge of death on September 14, 2021, after he fell into critical condition while serving a five-year term for practicing Falun Gong. He passed away three months later. He was 70.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Mr. Lin Xianchen was arrested at home on August 22, 2018. The police turned his home upside down and threw things that they didn’t find “useful” into his front yard. They confiscated his Falun Gong books, photos of Falun Gong’s founder, two computers and informational materials about Falun Gong.
The Kuancheng District Court held two hearings and sentenced Mr. Lin to five years with a 10,000-yuan fine on August 21, 2019. The authorities took him to the Jilin Prison on November 1, 2019 and waited another 13 days to inform his family.
Mr. Lin was often forced to sit on a small stool from early morning until 12 a.m. On June 2, 2021, the prison informed his family that he had been hospitalized. He was confirmed to have liver cancer about two weeks later, on June 17. Despite his condition, the guards still kept him handcuffed and shackled.
The prison didn’t approve his medical parole until three months later. When he returned home on September 14, 2021, he was emaciated. In the first few days, he was still able to eat some food. But shortly after, he couldn’t eat anything. He passed away in December 2021.
Past Persecution
Mr. Lin took up Falun Gong in 1998 and he credited the practice for curing his stomach condition, frozen shoulder and rheumatism.
One year after the onset of the persecution, in 2000, he headed to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong, only to be arrested immediately after he got a ticket at the Changchun Train Station. He was taken to the local police department and detained there for 15 days. The money and valuables he carried were confiscated. After he returned home, the two cows he had were taken away by the village Communist Party secretary. He later paid 800 yuan in April 2001 to get the cows back.
The police confiscated Mr. Lin’s Falun Gong books and lecture tapes on March 12, 2002. They broke into his home again on March 14 and brought both him and his wife to the Qingyang Police Station. After 15 days at the Jiutai Lockup, he was given one year of forced labor. During that time, the police often harassed his wife, forcing her to live away from home for a year.
While serving time at the Yinmahe Forced Labor Camp, Mr. Lin was subjected to brainwashing, forced labor and various forms of physical abuse. He was also ordered to write “thought reports” every month. All of his teeth became loose from a beating by guard Zhou Kaiming.
On September 7, 2002, the guards removed Mr. Lin’s jacket and beat him with a plastic pipe for half an hour. He was covered with bruises. The guards beat him again the next day. The flesh on his back was pulverized. The wounds later became infected and developed scabies, which was extremely itchy.
