Woman in Her 80s Accused of “Subverting State Power”
When the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began persecuting Falun Dafa, I refused to give up the practice. I was arrested and locked in a detention center with Mei, a practitioner in her 80s. One day, Mei’s son, about 50, came to the detention center to demand his mother’s release.
He waved the arrest warrant at the police and said, “My mother is in her 80s, and she can hardly read. It’s ridiculous that you accuse her of ‘subverting state power.’”
The officers knew the charge was absurd. One said, “Your mother is not an ordinary person. In her home, we found a lot of DVDs with Falun Dafa information, along with a computer and printer. She is very capable."
“Are you sure she did all this? Even I have difficulty using a computer,” the son said.
“We did not believe it either,” the officer continued. “But when we asked where those materials came from, she said she made them herself. She even showed us how she burns the DVDs.”
The son knew his mother did this to avoid identifying other practitioners. He told the police, “This shows that Falun Dafa is good—many women in their 80s have problems walking, and my mother is so healthy and capable because she practices Falun Dafa. She can even make DVDs.”
One officer said, “You are right. My mother is in her 80s, and she has to lie in bed. Falun Dafa is indeed awesome.” Everyone in the room found this amusing and laughed.
Still, Mei was later sentenced to a prison term. However, the officer knew that Falun Gong was good and asked practitioners to teach him the practice. When Mei was in prison, some guards covertly contacted practitioners, and asked if Falun Dafa could help their family members who were ill.
Surprise New Year’s Eve Phone Call
Over the years of persecution, Qin has been imprisoned several times and eventually fired from his job because he remained a steadfast practitioner. This is his story.
After I was released from prison, my phone was tapped and closely monitored, so I seldom used it. Most of the time, I removed the battery and SIM card and left the phone in a drawer. I turned the phone back on when it was Chinese New Year so that I could contact my relatives and friends.
On Chinese New Year’s Eve I answered a call. A loud and rough voice said, “Hey, brother Qin, how are you doing? Why don’t you text me your bank account number, and I will wire you 20,000 yuan.”
I didn’t recognize the voice at first and wondered what the person was up to. A few seconds later, I remembered he was one of my prison cellmates, a gangster boss who committed all kinds of bad crimes. During my incarceration, I often explained the teachings of Falun Dafa to him and told him how to be a good person. After I told him the facts about Falun Dafa and the persecution, and he saw how the imprisoned practitioners were tortured, he was sympathetic and respected our persistence. From then on, he addressed me as “brother.”
“So you got out? How is everything now?” I asked.
“Yes, I’m out now. I’m selling garlic and making good money,” he said proudly. “The authorities made you unemployed, and I was worried that you wouldn’t have enough money. The New Year is coming. Give me your account number, and I will wire you some cash.”
I almost laughed out loud. When we were imprisoned, he called himself human scum and said that he would do any evil and had no regard for others. Now, he was kindly offering to help me. I could feel that he sincerely wanted to help. He had heard a lot of facts about Falun Dafa, respected practitioners, and said they were good people.
I thanked him for his kind offer and said I had enough money. Before he hung up, he said, “Call me any time if you ever need money.”
I felt quite emotional after the call. No matter how bad we think a person is, he has an element of kindness in him that can be brought out by others’ kind thoughts and actions. Although he did not practice Falun Dafa, he did not go back to being a gangster after he was released and started a legitimate business. This is indeed a manifestation of how a righteous teaching can save people.
Happy Even Though They Own Nothing
It was the second marriage for both Yun and her husband. They argued constantly, and it looked like they were about to divorce. When they went on a trip to another province, they met a couple who lived in a remote, poor village. The couple was so poor that they only had a bed and a table. Yet they got along well and were happy. Yun and her husband could feel that the couple truly loved and respected each other and were not concerned about their financial situation.
They later learned that the couple practiced Falun Dafa. When they drove home, Yun’s husband said, “Look at them; they own nothing yet they never argue. We are much better off financially, yet we fight all the time. Perhaps you should practice Falun Dafa.”
Yun did take up Falun Dafa and stopped fighting with her husband. She said, “Dafa gave me much more than a happy family. My life has become joyous and peaceful, like that couple.”
